Konza Prairie Biological Station by mcsiegle

Konza Prairie Biological Station

JoMo @jsmjomo gave me this get pushed challenge" "I'm in the UK and no idea what Kansas is like so for your challenge I'd like you to do a landscape shot please showing off some local countryside or somewhere scenic."

This is another shot from my walk on the Konza Prairie trail. The sky was completely cloudless. This is smoke from where a pasture is being burned in the distance. This is a research station and there are many acres the public is not allowed on. Even in this section, you are required to stay strictly on the trail. In addition to many other ecological experiments, the different areas are burned and/or grazed in different rotations (every year, every other, every five -- that type of thing) to study the effects. I was out at the Konza Prairie a number of years ago just after they had burned a nearer section. I wish I could happen across that again when I have my camera in hand to see and photograph the dark earth, freshly burned of the old grasses, and the limestone rocks standing out like bones. Cleared of the old, fresh green is soon sprouting and this Flint Hills landscape is really gorgeous in full green.

The photos I'm posting this evening don't do justice to the Konza Prairie.

The Konza Prairie is jointly owned by the Nature Conservancy and Kansas State University. You can find more information here:

@jsmjomo -- not a very dynamic photo, but I wanted to show the smoke rising in the background.

Hi Mary @mcsiegle I am your get pushed partner for this week. I had a look at your albums and see that you have taken some very lovely and very interesting pictures. For this week, I would like you to take a picture that features a long exposure. This can be either a night time shot that features street lights, or light painting, or light trails. I hope you like one of these options, if not, please do let me know and I can come up with something else for you. As for my challenge, I have a list of ones I have already done and a list of things I will/ will not do under my profile. I await your challenge for me and I look forward to seeing your picture!

@stephanies Thanks, Stephanie! I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do with my relatively new camera. I don't have multiple lenses etc, but I now CAN work in a manual mode so I'm continually in a learning mode as well. I'll check out how long an exposure my camera is capable of. Stay tuned for results. I just left a challenge for you in your album. I hope you can have some fun with it.

Such a sense of space here, hope this fire wasn't suspect.
