The Shambles is an old street in York, England, with overhanging timber-framed buildings, some dating back as far as the fourteenth century. It was once known as The Great Flesh Shambles, probably from the Anglo-Saxon Fleshammels, the word for the shelves that butchers used to display their meat.
One of York’s most famous streets it was heaving during the day.We wandered around to see the Christmas lights after our meal in the evening,which had just been turned on.Unbelievably the Shambles was deserted!

@carole_sandford The only time I saw it empty before was when I was at college in December 1976 and it was snowing so we went for around York at midnight as students do!
Ohh......I took my kids there when they were about 10 years old (thy are nearly 40 now) and we walked all round everywhere but it was th Jorvik museum that they were most pleased with !!! (especially the smelly bit.....)
This is a beautiful capture of The Shambles, Shambles is a place for slaugtering or a meat market. We have one in Stroud with the original fold down chopping benches against the walls. Instant FAV
A beautiful evening shot, and so unusual for it to be so quiet! It's always a challenge to get photos in the centre of York without people - fav! We have sometimes walked into the city centre on Christmas Day when it is usually quiet, except for a few other photographers. The other time when it was really quiet was during the first Covid-19 lockdown when there was literally just me.
