Upside down Tree by fishers

Upside down Tree

This tree is in the newly planted fern garden in the Museum gardens in York. The tree is surrounded by ferns and recent planting shows that some climbing plants are being trained to grow up it.

Although there are references to the sculptural upside down tree in various reports, and a number of images available on the internet, I could find no explanation as to why this tree is planted in this way.

The lack of information allows imagination full range. Therefore, with a nod at Viking forebears, I suggest the tree was uprooted in a storm created by Odin, taken aloft by the god Thor and thrown with such force that it planted itself upside down.

However someone out there might know different.....

@pixiemac I think so. I might ask one of the gardeners about it, although that might spoil things. katharine

Bob
How unusual.
September 12th, 2013
@bobhuegel I think so, but I suspect there is a mundane explanation for its appearance.
