Almost caught him! by robz

Almost caught him!

This was most unexpected!
Platypus are extremely shy and can usually only be seen on sunset and sundown as they forage mainly during the night (their eyesight is very poor)
This one - and his mate - were out and about at midday, and totally unconcerned by people.
Unfortunately it's very hard to predict where they will pop up for their next breath - makes it hard to get a good photo!
A platypus? Wow, that's not something you see every day. I don't think I've ever seen one, not even in a zoo.

How exciting, I have never seen one before.

oh oh they are incredibly difficult to photograph!

Fabulous. Sometimes the photography gets in the way of a special moment.

Oh I hope you can catch his portrait!

Sometimes the pictures in your mind are just as important as the ones you get in your camera- you saw them and that's what counts! Good "almost" shot!

Hi everybody - I'm so pleased that you found the "almost" photo interesting. As several of you commented - in some cases the camera just gets in the way. That's what happened here. After trying to catch him for 10 mins or so I just gave up and enjoyed the sight of him popping up and down as he looked for worms etc. It was wonderful. Cheers Rob
