I have had such an exciting day today. After I had cleaned the kitchen windows so that I could get some shots of Woody Woodpecker as he has been visiting today, I thought I would go for a quick walk along Wood Lane. When I got just inside the lane, I realised that there was a car driving up slowly behind me so I moved onto the grass to let him pass and he wound his window down and said "Are you going to see the Hoopoe? I had to show my ignorance as although I knew it was a bird, I couldn't think what it would look like. Anyway, he said that one had been spotted along the top of the lane by the farm and asked whether I would like a lift up there. Well I don't usually accept lifts from strangers but he seemed OK, so I said yes. Anyway, when we got to the top of the lane by the farm, there were a load of people and cars there as lots of people had come to see it. I couldn't believe it when I saw this lovely bird in our lane in our village and in our country!!!
The Hoopoe normally lives in Southern Spain and North Africa and usually travels to France in spring to breed although they have been seen in Britain before. He was obviously a bit off course and although on his own, he would be better off traveling to warmer climes as it is getting colder here. He didn't seem at all phased about all the photographers aiming their cameras and scopes at him and just went about his business pecking around the grass for grubs. For more pics, please see my other albums. I will probably never see another one so thought I would post in all my albums today. Let me know which one you like best.
Thanks for viewing and commenting and giving Favs to my pictures - it is always much appreciated and I hope everyone has had as exciting weekend as me!
Oh my word so I have to fav him! I bet my old boss was there - he keeps an eye on the twitching sites - I've often thought that Twitter is a godsend for twitchers!!
I too have scolled backwards down these photos but I'm in awe of them all. Thanks for the story to go with it. As for the best - well I just love them all :) And being a bird lover it's just made my day :0 Fav
How wonderful to see one so close! We saw a tantalising glimpse of one in Corfu in April but it flew away before I had a chance to photograph it. A beautiful capture. Fav.
@beryl Yes I was so excited to see him
