Too much glare from flash. To avoid shaddow bring subject out from wall and bounce flash off ceiling so that it drops down behind the subject...hope this helps :0))
I agree the problem is the flash. Can you take a photo without the flash or use a lamp or something for lighting? I find overcast days to have nice even lighting for close-ups. I put the object I'm photographing on the windowsill. See my Jan. 8 photo for an example.
