This photo works very well i feel. The bird really pops out at you as the background is so nice and blurred. Wonderful composition, as you did not have to edit, crop or anything post photo.
Yep, I like this a lot more. And it looks from the number of comments that I am not alone. It's always cool to SOOC. The reason I think that the bird pops @mtnrunner is because of the snow behind it. Places the bird on a white background when the rest of the background is dark black and grey. Clever composition, and thinking of placing subject over backgrounds like that can always make a huge difference.
Still not sure about the framing of the shot. But, I'm maybe too pick about the "Gaze". I do like this much better.
@adambralston Hmm, good observation. I didn't realize the white was snow, nor realized that the white is what made the bird pop out as it did. Guess I need to look deeper into shots. I liked it without realizing the white pushed the bird to the front.
@mtnrunner Actually, not sure why I thought it was snow, come to mention it. Except for maybe the small amount of white on the twig to the right. And, I just assumed because of the type of bird and migration pattern, this is probably a winter shot? Heck, could be in a zoo for all I know. :) It's like looking at sunrise and sunset photos - can't really tell the difference unless you know the direction the camera is facing ( and time).
It's kind of a theme for me I suppose. But, anything I can do to offset the bird from the background, I'll do it. Even if it means recomposing the shot, stepping left or right, squatting, whatever...
Thanks Everyone!

Anyway, I use the background to my advantage when trying to highlight birds... https://www.flickr.com/photos/adambralston/14451901124/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/adambralston/14323494375/

Yes this was taken a few days ago in midwest U.S.A. and I was dealing with a few inches of snow.
Thanks Everyone!
