Best of luck Melissa ! I have some too, and found it quite hard to get sharp images, even at high shutter speeds, unless I used a tripod or some other way of stabilising the camera. But I am no expert.
You need to get your subject very close to the lens to get it in focus, and you will need long exposures. A tripod is a must. Instead of trying to get auto focus or even manual focus to work, set up a simple subject, such as a coin. Move the camera back and forth while observing the view screen (even better, tether to a laptop computer so you have a big image). You will see how close you need to be and how sensitive the focus is. Thank you. So far I am not having any luck at all, unfortunately.
