A Surprise Encounter DSC_3734

We were thrilled but also very surprised to come across a quenda (bandicoot) on our walk this afternoon especially as they are usually nocturnal. It didn't seemed alarmed by our presence and came quite close to us before disappearing into the bushes.
The quenda is a sub species of the southern brown bandicoot. They weigh up to 1.5kg and grow to a length of 35cm.They use their long front claws to dig for bugs, tubers and fungi. Quenda are classified as "near threatened".
Wow

oh wonderful - they are declining in numbers for some species in some areas so it is always great to see them - good ecosystem indicator!
