Jay Maisel did a photo of The Wall, which is also known as the Gateway to Soho created by Forrest Myers back in the 70s. I went to it to try to recreate Maisel's straight on shot (see Maisel's photo linked here: http://www.jaymaisel.com/recent-work/#image-25 ) After being frustrated because I could not replicate his capture of the dappled lighting, I decided to put my own spin on it. I angled up and diagonally on the building so it looks like a flat plane with 3-D extensions - almost computer graphic like. But the only thing I did to this photo was boost the color a little.
I really like your POV. And like everyone else has said, I prefer yours to Maisel's. Yours gives a more interesting perspective and dimension. great job
Honestly Michael I like your PoV over Miasel's!! About the only way you might have matched the dappled look is to find out what time of the day and time of year he took his. That is if the trees are still there.
@skipt07 - Thank you very much Skip - thats a high compliment. There are some trees and I've been there at different times of day and still don;t see how its possible. Maybe he used light screens to bounce off the wall? But his thing is natural lighting and not enhancing or creating it. His shot may have been from years ago and it was different then.
@michaelelliott - You might be right about the light screens Michael! I looked again and what stood out is the almost measured distances between the dapples. While its possible for that to have happened naturally, I don't know what the odds would be. It could be that is what drew his attention to photograph it?
Astigmatism again. If this were laying flat on the ground (which I originally thought it was) all you would need are a bunch of table tops and you have outside dining. Beautiful shot.
Thank you all so much. Your comments mean a lot to me. Spending the past week shooting in Maisel's back yard has been a great experience. I'm very much part of the corporate world in Manhattan, but down here is Soho its like living in an artist colony. Literally every thing around here is art - really incredible (and young!) This wall was hard to shoot because to get a good pov you need to be in the street. But this particular street is like four lanes in each direction and non-stop. Maisel probably had the city stop traffic and shot from a cherry picker or had access to a choice apt across the way. I was glad to find this pov and from my on-line reserarch I have not seen it. So cool to that! Thx again very much :-)
I know this is going to sound sacreligious, but I think Maisel's shot is boring and yours is much more interesting! I'm not a huge fan of Modern Art although some of it is visually appealing. The wall itself is not all that interesting to me in Maisel's straight on shot- even with the dappled light. I like your pov better because I can't really tell which way this picture is supposed to be- so I'm forced to use my imagination as to what it is and which way it's supposed to go. Your shot is far more engaging than Maisel's. Ok please step aside while the lightning bolt strikes me dead! Great shot Michael!
great capture!!
