I've always found it facsinating, especially as a kid, that from the blue collar working class neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn across the East River, there are these amazing views of the Manhattan skyline. It's sort of like seeing the Emerald City off in the near distance in such contrast. One may have thought that luxury high rise residential complexes would enjoy these views (there are some such projects with more on the way) but for the most part, it belongs to the everyday working folk from Astoria to Williamsburg. *Best Large*
what a great view - and yes, it's very odd how somewhere you'd think would have good views often doesn't while somewhere you'd not think of having good views has the most amazing views
@judithdeacon - thx Judith. I had biz in Queens in the morning and on way back caught this pic and the prior two :) boy bright sun is tough. I'll take nighttime shooting for sure.
like how you describe it, the emerald city. i remember how the towns outside the cities used to called 'bedroom communities' because no business was done there, people simply lived there, raised their children there and worked in the cities. now, of course, those towns are fighting to keep their small town heritages alive but are finding it difficult when the public wants to constantly consume, throw away and consume some more. there is no great and wonderful oz behind the curtain.
This photo makes me so homesick for NYC. The scene you've captured never gets old. The Chrysler Building has always been one of my favorites. Beautifully captured, as always.
This really is an awesome view! Every time I see your title, I can't help thinking of the chorus of the Beastie Boys song, "An Open Letter to NYC".
"Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten
From the Battery to the top of Manhattan
Asian, Middle-Eastern and Latin
Black, White, New York you make it happen"
I saw this post this morning, and the song has been in my head ever since. ;-)
