From Queens to Manhattan

I've always found it facsinating, especially as a kid, that from the blue collar working class neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn across the East River, there are these amazing views of the Manhattan skyline. It's sort of like seeing the Emerald City off in the near distance in such contrast. One may have thought that luxury high rise residential complexes would enjoy these views (there are some such projects with more on the way) but for the most part, it belongs to the everyday working folk from Astoria to Williamsburg. *Best Large*

what a great view - and yes, it's very odd how somewhere you'd think would have good views often doesn't while somewhere you'd not think of having good views has the most amazing views

Great composition and the sky is the perfect backdrop. Boston has similar blue collar neighborhoods where the view of the skyline is just fantastic.

You're so right, Michael - the best view is often from the outside looking in, rather than the other way around! Great shot!

like how you describe it, the emerald city. i remember how the towns outside the cities used to called 'bedroom communities' because no business was done there, people simply lived there, raised their children there and worked in the cities. now, of course, those towns are fighting to keep their small town heritages alive but are finding it difficult when the public wants to constantly consume, throw away and consume some more. there is no great and wonderful oz behind the curtain.

Love the mixtures of contrast with the old/modern architecture. Beautiful pov and love the differences between NYC and all of the other boroughs.

This photo makes me so homesick for NYC. The scene you've captured never gets old. The Chrysler Building has always been one of my favorites. Beautifully captured, as always.

This really is an awesome view! Every time I see your title, I can't help thinking of the chorus of the Beastie Boys song, "An Open Letter to NYC".

"Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten
From the Battery to the top of Manhattan
Asian, Middle-Eastern and Latin
Black, White, New York you make it happen"

I saw this post this morning, and the song has been in my head ever since. ;-)

Great shot and a wonderful view of the city. The buildings just keep getting taller and taller the farther away they get from your vantage point.
