Today I bought the Canon 5D Mark II. So finally able to get back to shooting. Ugh its been rough mentally without a camera these past several weeks. Big thx to all for Fav'ing two of my fisheye cityscape shots into this weeks Top 10 (taken with a Mark II rental). That sealed the deal for me :-)
@aspada - its the EF zoom 24-105 mm. I had it with the rental and found it extremely versatile (though the fisheye got all the attention). Rain finally stopped here, wife out to dinner with her BFF, so I'm hitting the streets as soon as I get of the the office.
Congrats, Michael! That's a fantastic thing to do! :) So, you changed Nikon with Canon, what made you do that? I like this 5D II, it's perfect for going on another level and doing something beyond the hobby! :)
@michaelelliott Yeah, that lens is great. Love the color and clarity it can give. The fisheye gets remarks because it's new as looks go but after a while it could get tiring I think. You made a great choice. Have fun christening the new toy this evening :) Did you get the Black Rapid? Also Kata backpacks are great.
@aspada - Black Rapid is cool. I ran to B&H at lunch it it was super crowded as always so only had time to get camera but will go back for bag. In meantime using my Nikon bag. But sling is key as this camera is bigger and lens as some weight.
@velina - I loved my Nikon but have been wanting to step up to a full frame. Nikon's new 600 is excellent overall, but also heard some so-so things being new and all, though great price for a FF. Nikon 800 was getting super expensive. So had heard many wonderful things about the Mark II and my photo friends swear by Canon they way people love Apple. So I rented the Mark II and loved it. So versatile and handled easy.
@happypat - Thx very much Pat. Yes full frame cameras are ridiculously expensive. In compariosn to many others, the Mark II is actually pretty good price wise.
So Canon won you over ... I can't blame you, ME> Fantastic camera and lens that you got yourself there. And I believe that Canon has much better customer service these days.
ME ... have to ask you this. I've been looking at the Nikon D600. You mentioned that there were "so-so" things about it. Would you mind telling me what they are ... I really need in informed opinion. I am thinking strongly of changing to a Canon (but not one as $$$ as yours!) Thanks for any help that you can give to me, Michael. :)
@karenann - Yes sure. I was very interested in it and it got some great reviews. But some photographers have said it doesnt have the handling feel like a full frame camerabecause of the body type. Also @cameronknowlton had trouble with oil spots and he wrote up a very detailed discuss page review of his own indicating some issues. Perhaps Nikon just needs to get past the break in phase. And then some others have said it totally great. The Nikon 800 looks awesome but mega-bucks expensive. The Mark II just seemed right for me.
They're both fantastic cameras, @karenann... I'm on my 2nd Nikon D600 body, fingers crossed. One thing I learned: I can't go back to my D90. The burn in concept is entirely possible. Fingers crossed for all Nikon D600 and D800 users.
@michaelelliott Thanks so much, Michael. That's what I thought. I was one of the unfortunate ones who got the D7000 with "oil spots." And I have only had it for five months. It's a huge issue with this particular model. And then I read it about the D600 too. So .... I guess that I'm going to Canon. Can't tell you how much I appreciate your quick reply and affirmation.
@cameronknowlton Thanks, Cameron! I am going through the "oil spots" issue on my D7000 ... the D600 is on order for me, but I think that I'll cancel and see what else is out there. BTW, I do love the 7000 (just got it recently) but can't trust it anymore. Thanks again.
Welcome to Canon! :-) You definitely started with a GREAT camera. Congrats. btw I've called Canon customer service often and they will walk me through anything. They are fantastic at the service thing
@wardie - Yes. With 21MP full frame my pics are even sharper and more detailed than before. The raw images look live and I can print huge with clarity. I really was really interested in the Nikon600 but got scared off by complaints about oil spots and other issues. I'm super happy with the Canon MarkII - so versatile and hanldes with ease.
One day I'll shoot you a message and we'll hook up in the City. Posted 3 from my trip to Dumbo
I can't decide between the 6D and the 5Dmkii or just go mad and get the mkiii :D
