Better on black. Back to Florida for one more. This is from Fort Pickens, built in 1834 and designed to defend Pensacola Harbor. Much of the construction was done by slaves. It was one of only 4 Southern forts to remain in Union hands throughout the Civil War. It was active during the Mexican-American War, Civil War and WW2. It also held Indian captives. During WW2 it was used to help protect from German U-boats. It was taken out of use in 1947. Fascinating history.
I like the sense of enclosure the framing archway conveys. Great textures too. That long crack in the brickwork above the next arch along looks a little worrying, but I guess that it is being monitored.
