The Fog Gave it a Foreboding Feeling

Was an unusual fog that morning two weeks ago - it would come and go - usually fairly low. You couldn't see down the end of the creek.

This is wonderfully dramatic -- a scene that reminds me of a twilight zone episode where a fog enveloped town was taken over by aliens, and no one could leave the mist. That's all I remember, but it fits your scene well!
