Looking thru cactus

This is a Prickly Pear Cactus. Native & plentiful. These cacti often get these holes. This is a picture taken through one of the holes. This cactus isn't problematic, here in it's native land, unless you bump into it :( . It has been imported to other continents including Austrailia back in the 1800's, where it became a "noxious weed" & caused "major ecological damage". It produces a beautiful flower & edible fruit. The plants can get quite large & hard to manage.....those spines! Not a good plant for the garden. Although, I know people who use it for landscaping.

I always thought these holes were caused by birds, not really sure...
Oh yes, it's a very dirty word in this country!! It still can be seen occasionally but they did a very good job of trying to eliminate it back in the first half of the 20th century. I remember seeing acres and acres of it where it had taken over natural bushland. They first introduced a beetle that was moderately successful in killing it but the greatest success was obtained with the Cactoblastis moth (wonderful name for such a devastating creature.)
But this shot is lovely, showing it growing happily in its native habitat and I'm glad to see it like that as it's a wonderful plant with a beautiful flower. Hope you can get us a shot of that when it comes along.

Wow, so fun to see inside. For some silly reason, I figured they were either hollow or liquid filled, kind of like aloe. We can't grow anything like that in Minnesota. It would freeze to death in no time!!
