Young Humming Bird by molizard

Young Humming Bird

Probably an Anna's Hummingbird. They're year round & plentiful around here. I've never seen one this "fluffy". Any other ideas?
What a beauty! Love all that fluff. No idea as I'm unfamiliar with hummingbirds but I'm sure one of the experts here will have an opinion.

Oh wow!! I've never seen this fluffy before either! His little face definitely appears to be an Anna's... I know they puff out sometimes, but I've never seen this... Wonderful capture! :D

If it's young and end of season for you (not sure where you are in the world), it may be molting. I've seen other immature juvies look like this, but certainly not a hummingbird. Great shot!

@lauracaseyfoss I live on California's central coast & I've found a nest with eggs in it one year in December. After the little ones left the nest, I went back to retrieve the nest & it had 2 more eggs in it, along came an attentive mother bird. (I was going to take the nest because I heard hummingbirds don't re-use them) I just assumed they produced offspring year round. Of course this year I can't find any humingbird nests...I didn't consider the possibility of molting....

he might just be scruffy - birds do get feather diseases - or it could be molt or juvenile feathers still molting off. Birdies do fluff themselves up to regulate body temperature too, and it certainly looks cold! ;) Are they his blurry little wings behind him? He's hugely cute :):):)

Gorgeous shot! He's just trying to make himself look really big to frighten off the big monster behind the camera... :)

FANTASTIC capture! I've never been able to get a close up shot of a hummingbird so I'm in awe of this one! He's definitely fluffy...I just assume when their all fluffed up their trying to keep warm, but I'm in Iowa not CA so I don't know why he would look like that?
