In one of my previous lives, I had come into a senior management role in a new organisation and made a few changes pretty quickly. Some of my staff had organised a meeting and asked me to attend. I knew they were gunning for me. I made sure I was a bit late arriving so that everyone would be there and before I went in, I put one of those stupid fire warden's hard hats on and walked in. It took everyone by surprise and broke the ice and removed completely the tension in the room. We had a very good meeting and I got my way.
Thanks for the smile you put on my face with your creativity. I've heard a saying before "mad enough to spit nails", guess this could apply to your situation. Just make sure you've got a good aim. I'll cross my fingers that the meeting is not as bad as you are expecting.
