Cherries taste as good as sweets. This year with the frosty nights in May, cherries are precious and rare, but sweet as always. Even if I love a lot of fruits, cherries are be my favourites.
My region is known as cherry region. To mark the opening of the cherry season the «Chriesigloggä» (cherry bell) of St. Michael's Church peals.
This all goes back to an old tradition, when locals used to rush off with 8,1 metre-long ladders through the Old Town to start picking the cherries grown on nearby common land. These days the «Chriesi-sturm» is a run just for fun and is followed by the opportunity for a splendid lunch and the start of the traditional cherry market.
Great photo. Did you know that I live in part of town named after cherries... The free translation might be cherytown or cherryville. We don't have such nice traditions but we have everything named after cherries in my hood, like squares, parks, stores, caffeteria, and even a theater... And I love cherries too...
When we did our Switzerland tour which was exactly this time of the year, once we got into the north of the country, there were kids with stalls on the side of the road selling kirsch at ridiculous prices. We would stop, buy a kilo and then eat them non-stop until they ran out at which point we would stop at the next stall and get another kilo They were beautiful. We reckoned you could see exactly where we had been by following our trail of seeds on the side of the road.
