The West Pier is a pier in Brighton, England. It was built in 1866 by Eugenius Birch and has been closed and deteriorating since 1975, awaiting renovation.
A really sad and sorry sight ...negotiations to save it went on for years and at one point the council tried to sell it for one penny but potential buyers imposed too many get-rich-quick conditions and the offer was withdrawn and after further attempts and further storm and fire damage it was left to rot . A great pity. I have many happy memories including steamer trips from the end of that pier (and the other Brighton pier, formerly called Palace Pier) and my grandfather also spent some of his retirement years there as a deck-chair attendant, It still makes a nice photo though!
