Pin Cushion Hakea by murnane

Pin Cushion Hakea

photo 147
This is a Pin Cushion Hakea (Hakea Laurina) I chose this photo because it shows the flower at various stages of development. The only thing it doesn't show, is the original pod, which is pretty itself with its pointy little end.

Hakeas are unusual, as the flower grows against the branch. These beautiful natives, are from Western Australia, and are very effective in attracting birds to your garden. They are a magnificent shrub, growing between 3 -5 metres tall.

My favourite hakea. It's beautiful and you've captured it perfectly. I love the seed pods, which are incredibly hard.

These are amazing flowers, I couldn't see where the stem was at first then when I read your info realised they flowered on the branch ! So colourful too & they look quite big !

Great shot. I just love these plants as well as the red flowering gums, grevillias and proteas. We really do have some amazing flora in Australia

These are so lovely. Are all of these colors found on one plant? They are so unusual as I've never seen a flower like this.

Thanks for sharing this as I have never seen a hakea before which is a shame because they certainly have a gorgeous looking flower. Hmm I wonder if they can be grown in Queensland. Nice shot.

@girlie @rach_who - My favourite Hakea, I love these! Thanks Marg! The best one I have ever seen is at Auburn in the Clare Valley. It is growing in a creek and even standing on a bridge it towers up and above! Wow!

Sadly Rach, not too much chance of getting one to survive up here... prolly won't like the wet summer.

Very crazy flowers! I thought you'd just hung woolly pompoms on the tree! Interesting how they grow out of the side of the branch.
