Black-backed Woodpecker by mwerner

Black-backed Woodpecker

Although this species stays year round in this area, they are fairly rare and quite elusive. I only ever manage to find a couple of them per year. This species flakes bark instead of excavating wood, so they are quite quiet in the forest, even when present. They are attracted to large numbers of recently dead trees, however, so I knew where I could find some. There was a large forest fire not too far away this past summer, and I just knew I would be able to find one there.
I've never seen this kind of woodpecker..........great find Mike!

That's one I've never seen - and I gather others find him a new one, too. Thanks for sharing this one.
