Worm Wood by mwerner

Worm Wood

This is a piece of Jack Pine out of my firewood pile. Under the loose bark, the beetle grubs have carved an artistic tapestry of etchings about 2mm deep into the outer layer of wood. This is just a small section. The entire piece of log was covered with this intricate patterning.

Shot with single off-camera flash at an acute lighting angle to show off the three-dimensional nature of the burrowing activity.
How intricate their carving was on the wood - and how observant you were to spot it!

Great shot. We've got some pine boring beetles around here, guess I'll have to pull some bark back and check it out. That is really cool. Just don't like the results. Dead trees.

They've made beautiful patterns. Do these grubs cause much to your houses?
