Growing heirloom tomato from seed!

I think it is wonderful these varieties are being preserved in our world. Seems the cooperate giants tend to prefer a patented limited gene pool.

The identical nature of today's bio-engineered wheat and corn seed should scare the hell out of us all. Not sure what's being done to rice. But we just keep marching ever forward toward... what... the first minor climate shift that will render the variant de jour nonviable that could result in a world wide shortage for as long as it takes to create or resuscitate a viable variant. If cheap oil causes wars, think what wide spread shortages of two of the three grains we can stock pile will cause.

It's so cool to grow something from a seed. I should try that next year. I have two hickory trees I've grown from seeds. They are about 7 or 8 years old now, but only about 3.5 feet tall. A challenge to get them past deer eating height. Maybe next year.

Heidi, the bio engineered foods are sooooo scary to me. Long term effects are unknown on us and the eco system in general.

I want to grow more from seed next year. I've done it before but this past summer was only tomato. There are some organic farmers in my area that I know raise from heirloom. I'm going to check them out.
