Teenager In Action

In my dreams I worry...

Try as I might I find it difficult to identify with the computer game playing that is so prevalent among teenagers. My youth seemed to be about making things and imagining things and reading things. Today teenagers seem to have such static lives. Is this right or wrong? Or, is it simply different?

In my dreams I worry...

I think they are missing out on so much that we found so valuable and formative, but times change and the future they face requires a different form of preparation.

@wordpixman that is my hope. I remember when I would not go to bed one night because I wanted to watch TV my mother said... "It will be the same with your kids one day, but it will be something different". I could not then believe her. Her words have haunted me ever since. She still reminds me of these things! This shot is of my youngest son who is all teenagerish at the moment. Difficult to reach out to... but, nevertheless still needs guidence. I do worry about him...

Nicely done, In my youth I spend days chained to the ole spectrum 48k, but on the other had there were times when I didn't go near it for days on end and went out and done other stuff.

It's all about balance and today there doesn't seem to be much of that anywhere.

Net, I have a teenage son, and a daughter who is growing way too fast as well.
I think even in a compture generated world, they still use their imagination.. With on-line game playing, they have to be able to work in teams with strangers all over the world to make their conquests and fight there battles.. In some weird respects, it shows them that friends are not just next door, but can be on a global platform. Their reaction skills are incredibily fast in comparrison to the older generations.. There hand skills are also more precise.. I was speaking to a Neuro Surgeon not long ago in regards to teenagers and game playing and she said to me that their generation will produce some of the finest detailed surgeons, as they are used to manipulating their fingers at such small fractions and their hand and eye co-ordinates are finer and more skilled.. Its just evoultion.
Fantastic photo.. Sorry for another ramble :o)

@michelleyoung I would love to read some evidence of the development of these skills and seeing them put to practical use. Difficult to get evidence of this sort I would have thought? Unless you know different. Difficult to have this sort of conversation here since it might be detailed and technical. So I can just hope you are right and that one day my boys will be able to put their skills to good use. I still worry tho'... I think that is understandable.

Not a ramble on your part. Interesting.

@pete21 Ah! Those were the days. I never actually owned one, but my friend did. We had a lot of fun. It was the first programming I ever did and now I am using those skills a lot. So thanks for the reminder. I have hope that things will go well for the kids of today.

@netkonnexion Net, when i get a spare hour I will search through my Uni's research database and see if I can find anything on the subject. I too, would also be interested as I am in a similar position.

Very cool. I have 2 boys and both love computer games - both grown up now and still play them. They both love to read too which I'm grateful for. I wish they hadn't been slaves to their games but they've both turned out as fine young men - thank You God. Your boys will too.
