Howard N - From here in Connecticut it looks like a feather. Possibly from a green Pterodactyloid or other extinct flying creature. The spine in the upper left gave it away immediately. Or, maybe not. A feather correct, but for making me laugh the most I will give you tonight specail award... "The prehistoric, anachronistic, out-of-date Doohicky Award!" Yaahy! Treasure it, that one is priceless.

coiled as it is with the long straight end It very nuch looks like what we would call it here in Connecticut, the sweep for a Foley Mill. It is a device used for mashing and the spring device would clear the bottom of the mill with each turn. Or, maybe it is something quite different.
