As I picked through the pile of stray pieces of lumber in my yard in search of materials for a raised garden bed, this little guy wriggled out from underneath one of them. I felt so guilty for disturbing his habitat! Guilt turned to goosebumps when he voiced a high-pitched chirpy warning and charged at me. After an acrobatic leap that I didn't know I was capable of, I decided I had *exactly* what I needed for my flower bed after all.
Thank you all for your comments! Paul, I did a lookup just now and it looks like you're right on - Desert Banded Gecko: http://www.californiaherps.com/lizards/pages/c.v.variegatus.html
There's even a sound byte of its chirp! (Which doesn't sound all that threatening all by itself, and now I'm a little ashamed of being such a wimp!)
