Waka Taua Salute by nickspicsnz

Waka Taua Salute

This pic of the waka (canoes) was taken during the ceremonial waka taua (war canoe) salute to the Maori king at Turangawaewae Regatta.
Was this in the waikato river? They must have been going downstream! Great picture!

@maggiemae Thanks. It is the Waikato at Ngaruawahia and I think they were going upstream. @alinz was there too and she can probably confirm whether that's right or not. All the waka actually stopped in front of the king for quite some time before moving off one at a time.

@nickspicsnz @maggiemae Yes upstream - heading away from Port Waikato which is much further downstream.

@alisonp @susiemc It was a great sight and the chanting was amazing. We could hear them coming from way up the river. I could hear horns too but it wasn't until I had looked at this photo a few times that I realised I actually had them blowing on the horns in it.
