@alinz and I joined a camera club about a month ago and have decided to bite the bullet and enter some photos for judging at the next meeting. One of the members very kindly spent today teaching us how to mount the photos we'd printed. What a difference mounting the prints makes! The next meeting isn't for another week but I'm already feeling really nervous about what the judge will say!
You go girls! Good on you for entering - the fireworks one looks really great and although I cannot see the others, I'm sure they will be just as good. It is a nervewracking time, but a good way to learn as the judge critiques your work. Good luck to both you and @alinz
I like the pov in this, and I like the fireworks picture on the left. I recently joined a digital photography club as a way to try and improve my work. I find that what the judges say helps one learn, and that is the most important thing about it. The tricky part, at least for me, is to use what I learn to improve my pictures, without becoming so wedded to the many rules that I take pictures only in order to obey them. Not sure if I can walk that fine line, but I'll try. The rule-bound quality ( that's a phrase used by another member, not me) of camera clubs does make me a little uneasy.
Well done Nick.....you will learn so much from the critic you get & hopefully the praise too. The mounted photos do look wonderful & very professional. Will watch for the result!
good luck nick :)
I've been a member of our local camera club for 10 years now :)
I also did a course in the summer (well a morning seminar) and I am now ...cough cough..a judge for the North East Midlands Area of the UK :)
@dide@deborah63@sallya@bkbinthecity@happypat Thanks very much everyone. It's a bit of a daunting prospect but I really hope to learn something from the judge's feedback. I know everyone will be very kind and say nice things but I hope they do genuinely like my photos a bit. Luckily I can go into the lower grade so they'll be even kinder with the feedback - still really scary though! It'll be like watching Dr Who when I was a kid - I wanted to look but was too scared so peered from behind a pillow.
@tristansmum Thanks Stephanie. I hope I learn from the judges comments too. I try to follow the main rules but sometimes I like things that don't follow the rules. Photography is so personal and subjective.
@paulaw Thanks Paula. I'm lucky to have @alinz to do photography-things with so we've joined the camera club together. Even so it's still a bit nerve-racking putting in photos for judging for the first time. I'm always keen to learn though.
@tristansmum yes there are 'rules' in our camera club, but most often the comments from the judges are very good to learn from - things like composition, lighting, detail, etc - we have learnt heaps so that's cool.
@rob24 Thanks Robert. The mounts are quite cool - the lady who helped us was brilliant and used to be a framer. The photos I'm entering have all been on 365 so there's nothing new to see I'm afraid (the firework was the centre shot of a collage).
Good luck. I've been thinking of joining one, but just haven't made the commitment as of yet. Like all have said, be sure and let us know how it comes out.
@nickspicsnz LOL, my first camera club judging isn't until March next year . My advice would be do what you like and what you are happy with, don't try to second guess what the judge might like
@phil_howcroft Ali and I and the girl who helped us with framing were all definitely second guessing - we even had a mini challenge to try and guess what grade we'd get, lol!
@julzmaioro Thanks Julia. I would have liked to join Waiuku because everyone was so friendly over there but it's just that bit too far away unfortunately. We're looking forward to learning lots from the judging.
