If you're living in Ontario you probably know that the last week's grizzly news about the killer who sent dismembered body parts to Canadian politicians was knocked out of the headlines by a shooting at the Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto. This is the mall on the corner of Yonge and Dundas that has been the backdrop for several of my photos. The above photo is from this morning. No sign of the police, but the corner was crawling with the media. To the right is someone being interviewed in front of the camera; to the right of her is a small tribute. I am not sure if this is for the man who was killed (a targetted shooting, apparently amongst members of the same gang, altho' the police are saying that it was a private dispute, and not gang related), or the 13 year old boy, one of several bystanders caught in the cross-fire. He was seriously injured and remains in hospital, although it appears he is in a "fair condition".
I have an alternate shot in my "just because" album which is something of a companion piece. (I don't normally do this, but somehow it seemed right today.) http://365project.org/northy/just-because
This doesn't happen very often in Canada...terrible. My daughter is home now but just finished her second year at OCAD. It's a little too close for comfort.
Wow...this left me speechless. It is such a fabulous street shot, but the story behind it is so, so sad. The thing that really got me about this photo was the guy just left of center, going about his business as if nothing was out of the ordinary. That created the heartbreak of this shot for me. BTW - b&w was so the way to go. It's hard for me to fave a photo that is so painful, but this is such a raw and honest photo. Well done.
A tense image. Sad news. From a photographic point of view it's like you're being a photojournalist, providing an evocative on the spot image with supporting written story. Well done.
My uptake of the news is sporadic...I rarely ever watch tv, and we don't get the paper. I am only learning of this this morning. Quite a tragedy, but your photojournalism is great.
eww, that is grizzly news......i enjoy seeing scenes like this, it's a great shot. my town is small......you'd never seen this many people on one street corner at the same time, unless there was a festival going on or some special event. That is what I like about this project, getting a glimpse into other parts of the world.
I saw this on the news in the UK. It's a tragedy and makes you wonder why the guy continued indiscriminately shooting after he'd got the guy he was after. I hope the young lad makes a full recovery xx
(had you thought about it for this week's street theme?)
