Portrait of an Alien

Ok - so it's a stretch... and i am feeling a bit ambivalent about this one... I had another idea for my third portrait-without-people shot for the "flash of red" february challenge, but it required cooperation and after 3 attempts that failed, my models lost patience...

so there's this... which i quite like, but i am not sure it will make sense to anyone... feel free to try to guess what this actually is a photo of...

This is really sweet with the processing. Cool, Northy!

I like this. Very ET with the ET boy wandering off set. Love the extreme contrast. Great addressing of the challenge, it was a tough one.

The bright light really makes the alien idea plausible!

Great shot

really cool shot. It could be a person leaving the ice. there is a certain gait I recognize.

Very cool shot. I'm guessing it has something to do with an ice rink - hence the zamboni tag!

Great contrast. Very creative as usual :-)

It certainly does have that close encounters feeling. Nice!

I love it! It's got great depth and shimmer!

Eerie mood in this shot, I like this. I'm thinking a bit of a paint job on the sides, hiding the details of the rink with black colour.... to add to the alien-ish feeling.

Great stuff; love the refection of the man. 1st thought it was a man leaving a restaurant; then I thought Passport control at an airport..... Do tell

Love the high contrast choice--very moody, very cool!

Very interesting picture with the contrast, light and atmosphere. Like it a lot!

Love the harsh contrast. Trying to decide if the reflection is on wet pavement, or an ice rink as someone mentioned above.

makes me think of close encounters

Great shot - love the reflection! Passport control on ice-skates?? : )

love it

It is really cool!

Leaving the ice rink? Go forth into the light for Gretzky is on the other side. I like the light and the super high contrast.

Cool

fantastic!! :)

I'm gonna go with leaving the rink too. Great contrasts and reflection xx

Love the contrast and the reflection.
February 4th, 2013
Very cool! Is it a reflection from a table?

@janim hmmm... this is the second time you've made this kind of suggestion so now i'm trying to think thru how i see these shots and how you do... and i am trying to decide if my hesitance is because i don't think i would like the outcome, or if i think it would look too contrived if i blacked out more on the sides... which is prolly silly because, of course, you wouldn't know there was anything blacked out - all you would know is the end product... need to ponder this... tx, as always, for forcing me to think about this stuff!

@vase @joeymc @rmhesketh @humphreyhippo @rennes @newbie @psychographer @archaeofrog

it's a hockey rink... the zamboni has just left to deposit the snow outside and the staff person is closing the gates to the rink... because the outside door is open behind them you get the blown out highlights... reflection is in the ice that's still wet from the zamboni... the other parents thought i was nuts shooting this scene at both games played on this rink ;p

wonderful. . .I love everything about the way you process shots like this, so I don't think I'd change a THING!

@northy yeah I'm not saying "put two black rectangles on each side", but just fill some of those lighted areas with black. I've been toying with the idea in a couple of shots, and I like the possibilities it gives in a shot like this with high contrasts. It will change the mood & it is not for all photos. But, just another tool for your toolbox... use when you feel it's appropriate :) And sorry for pushing this idea :-D

@janim no need to apologize! i don't mind in the least... i am always interested to hear what others see and how they see :)

Love it! I agree with Caroline regarding the E.T. feeling about it.
Putting 'zamboni' in the tags was a dead give away. ;-) I've never been to an ice rink, but I would have guessed correctly...IF I had read the tags, that is. LOL

You pulled everything together so perfectly in this shot. FAV
