Part of me thinks this picture would be better for a human element... another part of me thinks that the fact that no one is using them adds flavour to the image... the reality, of course, is that i could probably stand there for days with camera at the ready and no one would ever come by to use 'em ;p
Thank you for all the nice comments (and favs!) on my screw shots... I am incredibly behind in commenting and will likely remain so for tonight...
Oh, it's definitely better without people. As you say, no one uses them any more. I haven't seen that many pay phones for a long time. Do they actually work?
ha! I was just mentioning that I remembered using phone booths! Or struggling to find quarters/change to keep from getting cut off. I like the symmetry and processing here. And indeed, that no one is actually using them. A little different in the airport...sometimes I've seen people use them, but not often.
What a find! I'd be hard pressed to find this in our city. Funny, I was just at a photography exhibit today and one of the photographers shot only in black and white, and only with an instant film cam, and he hung all his little four by six's up on little clothes pegs attached to twine - and all they were were little black and whites of phone booths he'd shot all over the country. it was really simple, cool, and effective. Kind of like this.
I see what you mean about human element, but I think you do have it here. Like you said, the lack of people is telling a story, this technology is pretty much obsolete nowadays... only good for photos :) Of course, if you could catch someone talking to his/her cell right next to these phones, it'd be cool :)
I can understand you being in two minds about whether you want someone using one of the phones in the shot or not. I think they're just different photos though. This one is perfectly good for what it is. Maybe you can go back there with someone and set up a shot?
Is it just me that thinks someone using one of the two on the right would be good, but not if someone was using one of those on the left. Why is that?
@northy Actually we both hate cell phones but we're getting rid of our home phone. He has his business phone so i didn't really need one until we moved north. Think I'm one of the last people in TO to get one. lol
at the corner of danforth and monarch park avenues, on the northwest corner, there are two telephone booths. one is regulary used by a young man, every morning around 9:10. sometimes he's early, but mostly when i leave for work around that time, he's using it. so if you want to see a person using a public phone, that's where you can find one. strange thing is he's also always holding a blackberry. why don't i take a pic of him? because the few times i passed by him holding my camera he pulled his cap down to his face and turned around.
