happiness is... by northy

happiness is...

what can i say, i've had my eye out for a spot like this for ages... parking garages are just too well lit these days to look right... this is under a skating arena where one of my boys goes for hockey skills classes... the area is surrounded by a chain link fence, but somebody kindly ripped a hole in it and i was able to get in ;p hoping to be able to go back there next weekend, so any suggestions for a re-take on this will be most gratefully received :)

tx for the nice comments and favs on yesterday's chess shot...

ps - i think this looks better large, on black, with the lights off... but mebbe that's just me
Mac
You are so brave! That looks really creepy! Cool!

Cool...you are a brave lady!

Awesome shot
May 7th, 2013
kid, there could be deadly mold in there!
May 7th, 2013
how cool and hard core -- love the look of those cement pillars!

@riverlandphotos I agree with Mac. I'd be too scared to go into something that desolate around her. I can all too easily imagine the headlines the next day (or at least a page 2 on the gruesome murder of a photographer who wandered into a garage and...). So take care!! But the shot is fantastic! My only suggestion is that the darker spot on the left maybe should be bigger to make for a dark photo, or smaller so it isn't so distracting from the great grittiness in the rest of the area. Although it does convey just how dark is in down there.

@riverlandphotos @lynnb @taffy ok guys... honestly - not in in the least bit risky (other than probably mold as noted by @summerfield ) the underneath is exposed to the outside world... it was mid day (oops... camera time is wrong)... i've definitely done stupider things in search of a photo-op!

Mac
I just figured you were a bad-ass photographin' mama!
May 7th, 2013
@riverlandphotos well yah... that too!
May 7th, 2013
This is an awesome space. I don't know if I can think of a photo suggestion off hand but I know a theatre piece that would work well there. Great shot!
May 7th, 2013
@edie well - west side story comes to mind... "boys, boys, crazy boys" 'an all... ;p
May 7th, 2013
Love it. Nice and creepy and dark. It's daytime so light, but def looks better on black. Adds extra creepiness.
May 7th, 2013
That is a little more singy dancy than I had in mind but I can work with it.
May 7th, 2013
Major creepy in that ceiling!!
May 7th, 2013
wow be careful. May be a den of vampire zombies down there.
May 7th, 2013
... if so get a pic ;)
May 7th, 2013
Viewing large extracts all the detail, for sure. What a great location - I love old abandoned stuff like this.
May 7th, 2013
This is a killer place to shoot!
May 7th, 2013
Oooh cool, see if you can find any vampire zombies as that would really add an extra element to this, love the shot, great photo place :)
May 7th, 2013
Very gritty! xx
May 7th, 2013
haunting
May 7th, 2013
Eerie shot love it as it stands.
May 7th, 2013
Oof! Proper creepy it looks, in large on black. I didn't dare turn the lights out! Okay, that's partly because I'm looking at in natural light, and you know, if I turned the sun off people would complain.
May 7th, 2013
It does look best large, on black, with the lights off! Like I am standing there. Kind of scary!
May 7th, 2013
now that´s creppy! :D
May 7th, 2013
Wow I can imagine this as the setting for almost any of my favorite movies/shows - strangely each of them involve a corpse .... Fav
May 7th, 2013
Ooooh I love this. That ceiling is fantastic, I want to see more. Definitely view large - Favourite !!!!!
May 7th, 2013
wow - definitely better large - great photo -pretty scary place
May 7th, 2013
What a space! You're brave to wander around. I can't wait to see what you do with it!
May 7th, 2013
Fascinating place. If you bring a large-beamed torch that can be stood on its own, you can create all sorts of moods and hadows...
May 7th, 2013
wow very awesome!! love all the greys!
May 7th, 2013
That is just sinister - you can image all sorts appearing round those pillars
May 7th, 2013
Fab shot, love the darkness
May 7th, 2013
Very grungy! This location has lots of potential. :)
May 7th, 2013
This looks a pretty desolate place and love all that mould hanging off the ceiling. Great sense of drama about it and so well captured.
May 7th, 2013
Wow, this is fantastic! Love it - instant fav! I'm really looking forward to your next shots of this place. What about using that chair you bought specifically for another shot? (I find it rather disturbing that I think something so creepy is great! Is that just me?)
May 7th, 2013
Yeah, this looks like nowhere I would previously contemplate of going... in my pre-camera days but you do now don't you. Otherwise there are no ops for stunningly detailed and contrasted photos like this!
May 7th, 2013
Great shot of dark location and lovely atmosphere - judging from the reaction, next time you go it will be packed with 365ers lol
May 8th, 2013
@kwiksilver well - clearly not just you... i labelled the durned thing "happiness" ;p tx for the fav :)
May 8th, 2013
great location and photo!
May 8th, 2013
Suggestions? Hmmm.... a smoke machine... a model dressed in something macabre... a child perhaps(might freak some out... but then that's not such a bad thing, is it! LOL)... um... yeah - look forward to seeing what you do come up with.
May 9th, 2013
Ooooo, quite gritty. Fabulous composition.
May 11th, 2013
Great black and white. Nice.
May 19th, 2013
ace shot, loving your black and white stuff, always very sinister looking situations, but shot in a way that makes them seem less sinister and more geometric and architectural. Like the artistic face of alleys, garages and nocturnal streets. hows it going? whats life like on 365 nowadays. I need a 2014 challenge.
