yikes! apart from the fact that he worked with black and white, this was hard... Karsh was known for capturing the essence of his subject... he was also known for his distinctive lighting, and his focus on hands... his work is quite stunning... crisp and clear and full of contrast without harshness...
i really struggle with posed portraits as a general rule, and i have no studio lighting to speak of (or even not to speak of ;p).... i think this is a pretty decent shot of my boy, but i am not sure how well it measures up in terms of portraiture, nor how successful i was in imitating Karsh's work... regardless, it really was an excellent exercise for me!
@socalgal - hey Patty - this was a fabulous challenge for me... really difficult, and i'm not sure i succeeded to the degree i would have liked, but such an excellent and worthwhile exercise... thanks!!!!
Wonderful portrait...he doesn't even look exasperated with you trying this and that!! lol I think this catches the essence of him growing into a fine looking young man.
What a brilliant challenge - never seen his photography before - I really like - A LOT. It's a great natural portrait of your son (very handsome) and so nice that he'll pose for you.
