the sound of a crescendo by northy

the sound of a crescendo

this past week on hatters we were doing Michael Jackson songs... which i actually don't much like - but i do like many of his dance videos... my favourite is Smooth Criminal... "the sound of a crescendo" is a line from the first verse...

the video has a 1930s gangster feel to it... the above shot was taken at the same time i was working on the hatters shot...

hatters shot is here:

(this was shot with my wide angled lens - i could have fixed the lens distortion in lightroom, but i kind of liked it ;p)
I think the distortion adds to the pic, glad you didn't fix it. I am still struggling mightily with the tonal qualities that you see and capture so well. Any helpful hints on how to do that?

Very nice. I thought of MJ as soon as u saw this image! For the "record" not much of a fan either, except for "Billy Jean" which I feel is one of the best pop songs of all time.

@tigerdreamer tx Karen... but hmmmm.... i'm not exactly sure how to explain what i see or how i render it... at least not as a general thing... i do tend to either over expose or under expose - depending on what i think will get me the most depth out of the light i am using... in lightroom i will either increase clarity or decrease clarity depending on the mood i'm aiming to create... i use nik silver fx and i have a few "go to" presets i play with - depending on the subject... i will also check to see that i have most of the 11 "zones" in an image... altho' i am not too too fussed on that.... and then back in LR will check to ensure i have pure blacks and pure whites as appropriate...

one other thing is that i am really really picky about light... except for street shots and candids about town, i will rarely shoot something unless the light works... the only exception is architecture - which can be made to work based on line and perspective alone...

Unusual conception, moody, mysterious, intriguing, cleverly lit, beautifully processed - same old stuff every day... isn't it time for a change? ;-)))

More time to think about light and zone. I think I will be reading ahead to the light part of the black and white book.

Great shot.
I love that video and MJ was an inspiration when I was a kid. I don't dance, but I wish I did. His moves are still unique.
I love how you've captured the theme here.

Fabulous! I agree that the distortion adds to the mood. Can you post rubbish once in a while to make the rest of us feel a bit better about ourselves? Fav!
