hmmm... so... this would be "sooc"... for the second week of the dogwood challenge...

i am not particularly fond of "sooc"... it is a construct i don't believe in and while i certainly am in favour of mastering camera settings and getting as much "right" in-camera as possible, i am too much of a control freak to be happy with an image that i am not able to tweak in some way...

i may take another run at this as there is something else i want to try and i don't have the mind energy to go at it tonight... as an aside, the above image was shot using the camera's monochrome setting (duh ;p)

Would love to see a processed version if you have the inclination. I like the way the light in the background echoes the shape of the shield in the figure.

With you on SOOC. Great to get things as good as you can in camera, but I get a little irked by those who seem to see SOOC as a badge of honour that it is better than non-SOOC. Though I know plenty of SOOC shooters who don't but use it as a challenge to themselves.

To me, SOOC means you are leaving the processing to the programmers who wrote the code that runs in your camera to produce the image. They have to make assumptions about what you are trying to achieve and process accordingly. I'd rather use some software and use that to try and get to my vision of what the image should be. Sorry this may have turned into a rant!

Think looks good on black by the way.

Really like the lighting and comp on this. Fav.

nothing wrong with it

@lizhammond tx Liz... not sure I'll bother processing (feeling uber lazy at the mo')... but things I would do are:
- clone out the twinkle of light in the reflection
- darken the bottom a bit so it doesn't distract the eye so much
- bump the whites to get a smidgeon of pure white
- bump the blacks so the black around the outside is true black
- experiment with the clarity slider
- straighten (although I think I managed to get it reasonably straight)
- noise reduction
- maybe add a smidgeon of toner to the shadows...

Well silhouetted (is that a word?) and elegantly simple. Also your list of what you would have done is interesting. It's the little things that end up making the photo really work -- editing doesn't mean huge changes to an image, I've learned through 365.

This is compelling and sooc which was the criteria I think but, you get to edit this for the 50th week. I am looking forward to what you will do then. I agree with @kali66 nothing wrong here.

Not fond of sooc either. But for me it is because I am not great at getting it right. I am trying to lead a group on learning indoor photography and yet when I post I have usually tweaked a bit. This is good.

What is the 'straight out of camera'? ;)
Still looks very cool but I bet you were dying to tweak the blacks. :)

@humphreyhippo :D indeed... the blacks need to be... BLACK!

Nice capture. The lighting is wonderful.

sooc and still in your style.

question: if you tweaked it in-camera and posted the tweaked version, is that still sooc? because my camera is set so that it will give me a jpeg version of about 8 or 10 MB, i tweaked my photo using the camera menu's raw processing to get the background more white as i was aiming for high key. it then gave me a 1.35MB photo which was easier to upload.

@summerfield I don't know the answer to that... but... I'd tend to think that it's no longer sooc... that said... the whole thing feels a little fuzzy to me...
