an experiment gone horribly wrong...

this is for the 5+2 fire theme...
http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/24894/5-2-for-the-love-of-selfies-fire

what went wrong? well - i was pretty sure i was going to need off camera flash for this... i have a cable for off-camera, but for this i needed a wireless remote... happened to be near the henry's outlet, so i picked one up for, uhm, cheap... big mistake... got home, found the batteries to be dead... tore the house apart and finally found 2 CR2 batteries in my film camera... cannibalized them for the remote... remote now turns on - but for whatever reason, doesn't work with my camera and/or flash...

so i'm using my power bar flashlight on the floor in front of me... with a longer exposure than apparently i can stand still for ... can't manage an exposure that lights me, but not the white wall behind me...

do the selection thing in photoshop and paste onto a black background...

sort of follow this tutorial for the writing... but don't seem to get it to work quite right..

don't have a fire shot, am too hopelessly OCD to download generic one from the net, so fake it with paintbrush...

find there are parts of my hands that are too bright... attempt to fix in PS fails... sort of fix in LR... calling it a night and going in search of the mojito mix...

meant to work on black matte, but might not be worth your time...

(if anyone has any suggestions for the lighting i need on this, please let me know)
... nailed it. ;)

Creepy. There is no Spoon? Feels like Dark Magic to me, Harry Potter Death Eater type stuff.

@adambralston y'well - i seem to be suffering from existential angst these days ;p

Did you dodge / burn the lighting or was there other light sources? The edge lighting on your head and your outer right arm seem to come from somewhere else other than the power bar light. The end result is neat. Black matte works because the frame of the image disappears and the conductor is within a very large negative space.

If you ended up using flash, i'm not sure you would have gotten the edge lightings without the use of reflectors or multiple flashes.

@davidtom tx David... i appreciate getting your thoughts on this... i can't remember that far back, and in any event, i am quite happy to forget this miserable attempt at a shot ;p that said, i'm pretty sure that the only light was this powerful bar flashlight on the floor in front of me... my thinking on the flash was to bounce it off the wall/door behind me... although in the end, not sure that would have worked because the wall and door are white and as it was, i had to replace the background... i'm hoping to find some time to take another run at using off camera flash in this way - assuming i can solve the problem of getting my camera to talk to my flash without the use of the cable (which is short and doesn't work for anything but small set up shots)...
