NEST WATCH: Day 8, Barbed Tongues & Hot Wings

130 / 365
This morning's shot is an extreme enlargement of the frame so I can share something I discovered yesterday. In the chicks' open mouths you can see little barbs or hooks at the back of their tongues, so that live insects enter a one-way only path to their stomach. I also like this view because it shows how large the feathers are getting. I hope to continue shooting this series at least until they begin flying lessons.

Thanks Al for sharing this - it is fascinating - it is a rare opportunity to see into a nest...but with your captures we can get a really good look. Of course all I can say about baby birds is that it's a good thing their parents love them. Hooowee they are ugly.
