Eltham - London

Moated Eltham Palace. The original palace was given to King Edward II in 1305 by the Bishop of Durham, Anthony Bek and used as a royal residence from 14th to 16th century. By the mid-16th century it was in ruins now all that remains is the Great Hall with its hammer beaned roof and the bridge across the moat.
In 193 Stephen Courtauld and his wife Virginia acquired the lease of the palace site restoring the Great Hall and building an elaborate house with Art Deco style interior. In 1995 English Heritage assumed management of the Palace. It is open to the public and well worth visiting.
