In spite of the heat, we enjoyed a pleasant stopover in Corning yesterday. For today's post I decided a photo montage of our short visit was in order. And why not turn it into a history lesson?
Corning, New York is found in Stueben County next to the Chemung River. It is named after Erastus Corning, a financier from Albany, New York, who helped start the Corning Glassworks, the company which put Corning on the map. Now known as Corning International, it produces glass and ceramic products for industrial, scientific and technical use. Corning is also known as the Crystal City. Early connections to the canal system helped Corning to prosper. During and after the Civil War, Corning experienced an industrial boom. But in 1972, a flood caused by Hurricane Agnes left 39 dead and wreaked havoc on the city. Silt from the flood can still be found in many homes and a wall on display in the Corning Museum shows visitors how high the waters actually came. Today, Corning glass is still the main industry of the area, but Corning is also a well-know site for vacationing too. The Corning Museum, Corning Community College, and several other art and recreational businesses earned Corning a spot on American Style's Top 25 Small City Arts destinations.
So, if you're ever driving along the southern tier of NY state, make sure you stop by and enjoy the sights!
@friendie@jmj Thanks Carole and Jennifer. The next time we pass by I want to go to the museum again. There's a lot of cool glass in there just waiting to be photographed for 365!
@roejan@digitalrn@allie912 thanks Roe Jan- yes we had a short visit but it was really nice! It is a nice place to stop as you travel along the southern tier of NY and there are many other things in the area to see. Thanks to all for your feedback!
