Persimmon by olivetreeann

Persimmon

Chalk up another item I bought just so I could take a picture of it! (First there was the Roma Tomato, then the little blue car for the Book Challenge and now this!) Well, I was curious about what a persimmons tasted like, but I primarily bought it because it was such a lovely color! Well, I learned I am not particularly fond of pesimmons by themselves. One bite and I decided the taste was a bit too strong for me. I'm going to try it in vanilla yogart tomorrow morning for breakfast. Maybe that will help.

The count for this picture may say 364, but it's really 363 and I will be finishing my first year on New Year's Eve. I found out why the count was incorrect, erased the picture that was uploaded to 2010 by mistake and hopefully the count will correct itself. If not it will drive me crazy being that I am a person who loves everything to be in the correct order. You can imagine what my poor husband has to put up with! So, two shots left to go!

Looks like it corrected itself-yipee!
Looks good :)

It is always a relief to find that others do this too! I have a long list of items bought just so that I could take a picture!

Great shot. I've never tried one of these - what do they taste like?

Nice idea . . great photo. Let me know how you like it in the yogurt. Ah . . so you're a perfecionist, Ann. Is there a cure for that? LOL I'm sure that hubby loves you just the way you are. :)

@elizabeth (o: Elizabeth- most of the time I just take pictures surreptiously in the store! But yes, I will buy things if I think I'll use them more than once, and as I head into year 2, I'm sure the list will get longer!! Thanks Elizabeth!

@alia_801 Thanks Alia- well, they look a lot like a tomato and I sort of expected it to be like a peach or nectarine because that's sort of what the flesh looked like. But it wasn't really as sweet as those fruits, and it wasn't like a tomato either. If I could say anything it was sort of like nutmeg- not sweet, not bitter, but somewhere in between. At first it seemed sweet but lost its sweetness quickly. It's hard to describe- I don't need things to be super sweet, but this wasn't the same kind of fruity sweet like a banana or strawberries. I felt it needed sugar- but I don't want to put sugar all over it just to eat it, so I thought maybe the yogart will sweeten it up without resorting to sugar itself. I don't know if that makes any sense. I'm going to have Jeff taste it tonight for a second opinion- Just to make sure I'm not going crazy!

@karenann Thanks Karenann- I'm sure hoping it works in the yogart. I do a little dipping before I commit to a whole bowl! And will definitely post an update. Sadly there is no cure for perfectionism, but when kept in control and maintained at a realistic level, it can actually benefit others and improve one's self-esteem. (o:

i never had this fruit, if i did, i probably didn't like it. it looks alright, like an orange tomato. is it sour? is it pulpy? is it sweet? is it chewy? those are the questions evoked by your photo. nice perspective, ann.

i've been known to buy anything (within reasonable amount) just for the sake of taking a photo. i could be wasteful, sometimes.

The picture shows 363 now. The persimmon you have is a Japanese Persimmon. There are also native American Persimmons, which taste much different. I don't like either type, myself. Deer love them, and I'll let them have them all. I do like your picture, though!

Great picture and details to describe how it tasted.

I hope that you are going to come back for the next year. I've really enjoyed your pictures, your comments, and your friendship. I do feel like we've known each other for a long time. I guess we do...when we check in with each other every day!

It looks good, but I can't say I've ever tasted one myself.

wow that look juicy and fabulous color! You did great capturing the freshness. Wow Ann you 're almost there! Congrats on the impending achievement!

It looks delicious..but I've never tried one..will do now..its such a pretty color...can see it in a bowl with other colorful fruit.

@summerfield Thank you Summerfield! It does have the consistency in appearance like a tomato, but it does not taste like one. It is not sour, but not overly sweet either. It is not pulpy or chewy. Jeff and I just did another taste test and the verdict is that they are most like pears or apples. I voted for a pear; Jeff a soft apple like a Macintosh. But I wouldn't say they are as sweet as an apple. I think it's probably a taste that grows on you. So it's going in my yogart for breakfast but I'll probably not buy another one all too soon because when I confessed to Jeff I bought it for a picture he looked at me as if I had three eyes on my face! Then we both laughed about i!
@dmariewms Thanks Marie- I remember seeing that when I looked up recipes (I thought if I really liked it I'd get more). And it's good to know that if I really don't like it in the yogart tomorrow I can leave it in the woods for the deer!
@mrssmith Thanks Carla! I so appreciate everything you said, and yes, I'll be back. I really can't imagine not being here- it has been such a big help through the depression of not having a job and two others falling through. I agree- I love reading your comments and feel a friendship even though we've never met! But maybe we will someday. Until then, we'll check in on 365 and continue to enjoy seeing the world through each other's lenses!
@digitalrn Thanks Rick. Well if you ever feel like being adventurous- know you know a fruit you can try!

@michaelelliott Thanks Michael- I'm excited! The year has gone so quickly!!
@bruni Thanks Bruni! I think it would taste great in a combo with pears, mangos, bananas and apples. I did look up some recipes on line but they seemed a bit complicated and nothing simple like a fruit salad. That sounds much better.

Great shot! They look so juicy. I like persimmons. We get two types of fresh persimmons: one kind is crunchy, the other kind is soft and squishy. Dried persimmons are fun to eat too, because they're chewy!
December 30th, 2011
@myautofocuslife Thanks Livia! Interesting info there- I think the dried ones sound good!

Just wanted to let everyone know I finished off the persimmon this morning with breakfast. I found when I peeled it, I liked it better, so off came the rind and onto the cutting board it went. Then, along with a banana and some almonds it was tossed into my vanilla yogart (Greek style-yum!) and ta da! It's now happily being digested (o:

I love persimmons and you got lucky. There are two kinds, that flatter one and a taller, more heart (not valentine) shaped one. This is good firm or soft, the other is very bitter and sucks the moisture from your mouth until it is soft (think Jelly texture)

I log on to 365 to get educated! Thankyou all for the info about persimmons ... a fruit I haven't come across before.
December 30th, 2011
@pandorasecho Thanks Dixie! I remember after I brought it home and started reading about them on the internet I was worried I'd bought the second one you'd mentioned. But thankfully one site had a picture and mine was the edible kind. I can't say I'd buy another one, but mixed with the yogart and banana this morning it was quite tasty.
@jmj Thanks Jennifer! Thanks to 365 I've found myself considering the purchase of several interesting fruits or vegetables. I almost bought a pomegranite today (which I have had before), but since I just finished the persimmon I decided to wait a week! If you're planning to buy a persimmon- make sure you read Marie More's and Dixie Goode's advice above because not all persimmons are good for eating.

Cool shot.....LOL another OCD person but mine is combined with major multitasking and somehow the 2 don't always work together!
December 31st, 2011
@cimes1 lol OCD and multitasking! You can do it all and do it all well! Thanks for all the comments today Carole. I know how long it takes to get caught up on viewing everyone's shots!
