#365! by olivetreeann

#365!

Well, here it is! The grand finale of year #1! What a year! I just spent a half hour reviewing it and can't believe how quickly it went by!! I was laughing at January when I back filled 2 weeks worth of photos thinking that everyone's project started on Jan. 1 and I was behind. I remembered those first few months of frustration with my camera, not knowing that it was capable of doing some of the things I wanted, but I was setting it incorrectly. A wonderfully informative follower steered me to the right switch (and encouraged me to read my instruction manual!) and I was off and running with my camera after that. I did my first selfie (inadvertently) in February when I shot a picture of a log burning in our woodstove and began to inflict my 365 compulsion on my swimming partner. Spring was filled with many shots of flowers, grandchildren and mushrooms. In May my first photo made it to the Popular Page (I still don't know how that happened!), "The Bushkill in Spring". By July I'd joined Picnik and was discovering the joys of processing and in August I joined my first monthly challenge which I thought I'd never have the creativity to finish, but was surprised at how much fun I had doing it. September was another banner month with a second photo on the PP which also made it into the top 5 of a Tag Challenge, "Sepia Plant" and a second shot also hit a Tag Challenge top 5 too, "Road Music". I never really know how these things happen, but when they do, I'm pretty happy!! I also noticed my 265 milestone that month- after having missed every other one (50, 100 & 200)! October brought one more trip to the Popular Page with my waterfall shot, my second album was filled with another monthly challenge, and November was over in a blink of an eye. As the December days wound down, I took part in another monthly challenge of opposites and completed a 7 day, same subject challenge last week. Not counting a few that I took in my second album, I've done 5 selfies this year (even though I don't like them-really!), bought an odd assortment of things to photograph, cajoled friends and family members into participating in my photographic madness, introduced 365 to several curious souls who were wondering why I was photographing produce in the supermarket or craft items at A.C. Moore, made up games to spur my creativity on (Ok Ann, you have 30 seconds to photograph whatever you see in the kitchen in black and white- GO!), shot pictures "in the box", "outside the box", of the box, and just plain old had FUN! I've not only grown in my photography but in my writing as well and when I thought I might not return, it only took a day or two to realize that not returning would be as easy as cutting off my leg. Although I know year 2 will be different (I need to become more discerning with my time on here!), it will still be as exciting as the first for as you can see in the photo, there's a new kid in town. Thanks to a completely unexpected and overwhelmingly generous gift, I have a new "toy"- a Nikon Coolpix 5400- which should expand my horizons and challenge my skills even further. I thank all of you who've been on this wonderful journey with me so far and I look forward to more fun and adventures in photography with you in 2012!
congrats! It is interesting going through your photos again, isn't it? I never made in on the PP my first year. Here's to hoping I make it some time during my second year.

Ann, this has me tearing up! I share so many of the same feelings you have shared here. And wow, I love how you went back to your whole year in photos and analyzed how you grew and progressed each month. That was a great idea! I don't believe any one who has not done the project would fully understand how emotional it can be, looking back over one's life ....just a YEAR in one's life...and reliving all the work, the worries, the triumphs, the disappointments, the learning, the regressing, and the friendship-making. Congrats on a complete year! I am glad you will be continuing in some way...even if it is less than you've done this year.

I like the colors in this
December 31st, 2011
congrats! I'm glad you really enjoied it and see the improvements
December 31st, 2011
Congratulations! I'm glad you're continuing. Like you, I feel my life has been greatly enriched by 365 - both in the joy I get in sharing other people's lives through this community and also in now seeing the world with new eyes.
December 31st, 2011
Congratulations Ann on an amazing achievement!!! I've very much enjoyed sharing pics and chatting with you. Happy to hear you'll continue. Have a wonderful and happy New Year!!!!
December 31st, 2011
Oh and this pic is cool kind of like pop art. Fav!!
December 31st, 2011
Congratulations Ann - a wonderful achievement and have created a fantastic photo dairy of your year. Well Done!
December 31st, 2011
@annaruth Thank you Anna- I don't think there's any formula or process to get on the pp. Sometimes I think it's just a matter of taste. Some people will like your shot and it happens. That's why I think it's important to do the project for yourself- the fun, the creativity and the challenge to improve, and meeting other photographers. The rest is truly icing on the cake. Thanks for being a part of my journey- Ms. Queen of Selfies!
@espyetta Thanks MaryBeth- I have so enjoyed our journey together! You won't notice a big difference. There are quite a few people I comment on, that don't comment back and so that's where I'll be cutting down on time. I really appreciate how faithful you've been to comment on my shots. It means so much!
@kerristephens Thanks Kerri! I leave 2011 with a processing bang!
@woot Thanks Davide- in some ways I'll be starting all over again with this new to me camera a friend of ours gave me. But that's a good thing- it keeps you fresh and out of a rut!
@jmj Thank you Jennifer. I have so enjoyed seeing Scotland through your eyes! And I'm looking forward to more- and even, Lord willing, making it to Scotland someday. The desire is greater than ever now, but the funds not so great! But who knows!
@michaelelliott Thank you so much Michael- I can't believe you fav'd this!! I truly admire your work and hope that maybe we'll be able to meet up in NYC someday- once I feel confident with this new camera. How fun to follow you around on one of your shoots! Thanks again for your encouragement and congratulations- won't be long before I'm sending them to you!
@nicolecampbell Thank you Nicole. I've so enjoyed getting to know you through the challenges and look forward to seeing more shots from my Australian Martha Stewart friend a.k.a. Supermom!
December 31st, 2011
Well done Ann!

Ahhh, Ann. What a year full of great experiences! Thanks for the great photo and stories. I have loved having you here, not just to see your great photos, but to have your encouragement and support. Has meant more to me than you know. Thanks for all that you've done for me .. and many others, I'm sure. Looking forward to seeing more of your photos next year. :) And enjoy that new camera!
January 1st, 2012

@httpgeffed Thanks Colleen! And thanks so much for all the comments and support over the last year- I have truly appreciated each and every one!
@sls Thanks Angie! I really appreciate your kind words!
@karenann Thank you Karenann! The feeling is mutual- you have been an encouragement to me as well. I hope that 2012 will be the year we meet somehow! And now you know you are not alone in the learning a new camera department!
@sarasdadandmom Thank you Terry! I am so glad to have gotten to know you through your pictures and comments. And I look foward to all the humorous ones to come- you keep me on my toes!

And a special thank you to everyone who endured this post. I just looked back at it and "my goodness!" it's long!!
January 1st, 2012
Very inspirational as I am just starting the project. So thank you very much!
January 1st, 2012
@sgoodin1 Oh my Sara you are brave to read this whole thing as newbie!! Welcome aboard! I hope your journey here is as fantastic as mine is/was. Thanks for patiently wading through this commentary! And thanks for the view!
January 1st, 2012
Hi Ann..congratulations you made it. I enjoyed your beautiful pictures and comments..had to go into your calendar to see when we started following each other.. I figure it was in August although it feels like I've known you for much longer than that.. I'm so happy we met and I'm looking forward to more of your precious pictures. have a wonderful New Years Eve..and happy clicking in 2012.
January 1st, 2012
looks like one of those warhol arts. congratulations, ann. aha, a new toy! nice, now you have to make full use of this new camera. i guess we're meeting up in niagara sometime then. let's cajole @karenann to come.
January 1st, 2012
@bruni Looks like August 6th was the first time you commented on my photo- the one of my husband playing my grandfather's banjo. But you are absolutely right- it feels like we've been commenting on each other's shots for longer than that. I guess that's why photographers click so well. (Ok- I know you're groaning!) I have so appreciated your comments and pictures Bruni and I'm glad we'll continue the journey through 2012!
@summerfield Thanks Vikki! I guess it could be a Warhol- I do like his soup can pic! Yes- this was a gift from a friend of ours who had to move suddenly and couldn't take much with him. He knew I'd been doing 365 and insisted rather than putting it into storage, that it was mine- lock, stock and barrel. I am still amazed that he did that. When I'm on the run I will still use my little p & s because I know what to do with it. But at home, I'm going to experiment and read through the manual, giving myself daily assignments on what I've been reading. I'm going to try not to rely on auto because so often it uses flash and I don't like the lighting from the flash half the time. Anyway- it's going to be fun learning this camera- especially when it comes to macros! I'm looking forward to our upcoming "meet". Karenann's a bit of a ways away on the western side of Michigan, but maybe we can twist her arm!! Until we meet- be happy and keep taking pictures!
January 1st, 2012
Grand, Grand Finale.

Congratulations! I'm so glad that our paths have crossed. I still think that someday we will meet! I will be along fir the journey!
January 1st, 2012
Well Anne, it sounds like we are in for another exciting year, especially with your new friend. Great gift! Have fun, and we look forward to another year.
January 1st, 2012
Congratulations on completing your first 365! I looked back to find when we first became 365 buddies - around the end of July I think. Having a challenge buddy made it all much more fun and I've loved seeing the different ways we've tackled the same words and ideas. I could always count on you for an insightful, meaningful comment, especially where the feathered ones were involved! Have lots of fun with your new camera - I think it's your turn to think up a challenge this year! :) Happy New Year! :)
January 1st, 2012
congratulations on completing your 365 - I suddenly realized that I have missed a few days - so have a bit to go. A great New Years to you .

January 1st, 2012
Congrats on your end of year achievement. Thanks for sharing and looking and commenting on all my pics
January 1st, 2012
Ann, how nice you documented all your accomplishments. I began my project in March and never knew about the PP until later, like Aug. or Sept. I did make it once (for all I know) with the hawk on the Mockingbird Lane Street sign. Congratulations and look fwd to seeing you in 2012 with more of your innovative shots. Thank you in the meantime for being so supportive and a faithful follower :-)
January 1st, 2012
yea - yea - yae - you are staying with us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 1st, 2012
Congratulations Ann!! Glad to hear you have a new "baby" and will be continuing to share your images with us!
Happy New Year and may you and your family have the most Fabulous 2012!!!!
January 1st, 2012
Bev
Great photo. I never had anyone help me with things I wanted to do. I've seen so many great photos and effects but nobody has explained how to do them. So I just take my junky little pictures and say good enough. I think that this is going to be my last year. I feel inferior to all the great photographers here. Congratulations on a successful year.
January 1st, 2012
Congrats on both completing a full year and on your new toy! I enjoyed reading about your journey as I was in much the same boat as a complete novice when I started this project. Looking forward to seeing your accomplishments in year two!
January 2nd, 2012
Congrats on finishing your project and on the new camera!! Glad to her you will still be posting! This site provides so many learning opportunities and opportunities for growth! Happy New Year!!
January 2nd, 2012
@pandorasecho Thank you Dixie! Now on to year #2!
@mrssmith Thanks Carla! I am so glad we met too! You have been knit into the fabric of my heart and if I'm ever heading westward, you will be hearing from me!
@digitalrn Thank you Rick. I'm excited about the new camera and I know it's going to take me time to understand it- but what better place to learn! Everyone here is so supportive! Thanks for being so faithful to comment on all my shots- I truly admire your photos and look forward to seeing each others shots throughout 2012.
@alia_801 Thank you Alia- I really enjoy being your challenge buddy! And like you, I enjoy seeing how we approach the subjects in our own unique way. I'd be happy to think up a challenge- just let me know what month you want me to do it and I'll start plotting now! I know one thing I want to is the "found alphabet" where you look for the alphabet letters formed by common everyday objects (like scissors can make an X)- but I can do that anytime and I want to understand my new camera a bit better before I start that one. Thanks again for making up the challenges- I really think they're fun!
@friendie Thank you Carole! Looking forward to seeing those final shots!
@bkbinthecity Thank you bkb!
January 2nd, 2012
Congratulations Ann! Its a wonderful feeling being done isn't it! ~ I'm glad your continuing!
January 2nd, 2012
@sarah19 Thank you Sarah! I've loved seeing your beautiful collages and the lovely sites you've visited. Looking forward to more in 2012. Blessings to you and yours in 2012 too!
@eyetoeye Thank you Maria! I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work as 2012 goes along. So glad we met through 365!
@steeler Thanks Howard. I'm honored you look at mine as well! Looking forward to seeing more of that awesome coastline of yours in 2012!
@cimes1 Thank you Carole! I so appreciate all your faithful views of my pictures. The pp is nice, but for me it's even more important to have people that will faithfully view and comment on my shots. It's a way that this cyber community becomes more personal. So I'll be viewing your shots of sunny FLA. this winter with just a twinge of jealousy, but I know I'll enjoy them too!
@adobewaters Thank you Adobe- you are sweeeeet!
@kloud Thank you Bonnie. You have been such an inspiration to me! I hope that as I learn this camera, I'll be able to take a stab at more than just the vegetables in my kitchen. There could possibly be some smoke or water pictures in my future with this camera!
@prttblues Thank you Bev- I think you have just not met the right people here yet- don't give up!! You need to follow Bonnie Lusted- the one who posted just before you above @kloud Everytime I've seen someone ask her how she took a photograph she has explained it. There are some people that will not give you a recipe as they do it, because they don't want you to be able to copy them and maybe there are photographers who feel the same way. So, don't give up- keep looking for people who enjoy helping others to learn. I know they're on this site, but it might not be obvious at first. I have appreciated your input on my photos- and now that I know you're a soccer fan, that's even better!!
January 2nd, 2012
@lisjam1 Thank you Lisabell! I'm looking foward to seeing your shots this year too. I know I've followed you, but you're not on my list of followers. I don't know if you want to make that official or not, but I'd be honored if you did! Thanks again and congratulations on completing your 365 too!
@twinsplusone Thank you so much Sharon! That's so true about all the opportunities. And I know I'll need a lot of feedback with this new camera I'm learning which is another great thing 365 provides!
January 2nd, 2012
@olivetreeann Hmm, it shows I’m following you when I come to your page.
January 2nd, 2012
@lisjam1 I will have to double check that- maybe I missed it- I'm sorry if I did- oh, I probably did- I can lose track of things so easily these days! I think it's time to add gingkoba to the vitamins!
January 2nd, 2012
I'm glad you have been here! I started in May, so I have a ways to go yet. I suspect I'll make it... addictive, isn't it?
January 2nd, 2012
Bev
@olivetreeann I'm on my second year... People don't seem to want to follow me. It shouldn't be a big deal. I'm no professional. I never will be. It would be nice to know how to do some things but you can't do a whole lot with a point and shoot which is all I can afford. But someone told me that if I use it right that's all I need and not some expensive camera with 1,000 different lenses and parts. I just can't get the followers that a lot of others have gotten and trust me... I've done everything people suggested to get followers and it didn't work. I'm an outcast. Always have been. I should be used to it... Sorry for the long blurb. My camera uploading program crashed today and I'm not happy about it. I don't know if I'll be able to upload my photos from my camera without it. Spent most of the day trying to fix it and even uninstalled and reinstalled but it still won't work. :( And I did all of this with a migraine to boot. Bad start to a new year I guess.
January 2nd, 2012
@dmariewms Yes Marie, it certainly can be can't it! Looks like you're about half way through then- believe it goes quickly! Thanks!

@prttblues I do understand the limitations of a point and shoot. That's what I started with and would still be using if our friend hadn't decided to be so generous. It took a lot of trial and error to figure out what my camera could be capable of and I still don't really know all of the things it can do because I haven't really taken the time I should to go through the manual. I'm trying to be more purposeful with that on the new(er) camera because I know it has a better lens. It's still not a DSLR (dream camera), but it's better than the camera I have now. As for the followers, I don't know what to tell other than it's their loss. Your pictures are totally different than mine, but that's what I like about them. I wouldn't think of doing all those things you do with light. So I enjoy seeing that. And that you do those with your p/s is pretty awesome. It makes me very sad that you feel like you're an outcast- I feel all people have value and are important and should be recognized and appreciated for who they are. I don't know how to encourage you other than to say, I'm glad I saw your discussion that one time and responded to your invitation. And even though it's just little old me posting comments on your shots, I hope they've been helpful to you. I can't help with the computer troubles- I'm definitely not up to speed on those matters- but I do understand migraines having suffered from them since childhood. I am finally conquering them since I've been cutting out sugar and eating more unprocessed foods. Seems sugar was the biggest trigger of them. I usually can't do anything when I have a migraine- wow- that you could even think about working on the computer is amazing! But then again- I'd be upset about not being able to upload pictures too. I hope things turn around for you and very soon. It sounds trite to say "Hang in there" but I really hope you do- at least for your second year. You can count on me to follow you until you're done. I hope that encourages you in some small way.
January 2nd, 2012
Congrats on a whole year. It must feel great.
January 2nd, 2012
@shuterfly Thanks Sondra- it went so quickly after the mid-way point!
January 2nd, 2012
Congratulations on finishing the 365 year! Quite the accomplishment. Remarcable how quickly the 365year went, isn't it? And how an experience like this "opens new windows" in many ways... new views, knowlege, view of oneself, others and the way we may see ordinary things.
January 2nd, 2012
@photobutton Very true Siv! I'm glad you opened the window of Norway for me!
January 2nd, 2012
I cant believe I havent been Following you! I swear I was lol oh well I love this pic cuz its so creative!
January 2nd, 2012
@cvanheel Thanks Cade- that's ok you are now! Our shots are very different from one anothers- but that's exactly why I followed yours. I love the excitement of your action shots and the excellence of your b/w. I hope you'll be entertained by my "little world" of this and that and I look forward to your comments in 2012!
January 2nd, 2012
Ann, congratulations on an amazing project! I hope you enjoy your new camera and I can't wait to see what you do this year :)
January 3rd, 2012
@changingtides Thanks Allie- and I'll be enjoying your bird shots!!
January 3rd, 2012
How did I miss your 365 birthday photo? ...Congratulations Ann! and have fun with the new camera! I find from using my friends Canon versus my Nikon that Canon's do better with more light and process warm tones such as reds better while my Nikon does really well with cool colors such as blues and is more forgiving in low light situations... Let me know what you think! I am thinking about eventually investing in a Canon powershot as it may not be so safe carrying a large camera in my new neighborhood! :)

365 is an amazing site with amazing photographers and people!
January 4th, 2012
This is so cool! I love it. Love the processing and the composition
January 4th, 2012
@potsbypam Thanks Pam! Yes- I'd say I'm finding the little Canon liked the warm tones much better and the Nikon seems to prefer the cool tones. I'll have to keep that in mind. Since I'm not limiting myself in my second album, I'll still be using the Canon for awhile while I get used to the Nikon (which I'm only using in my main album so that I'll use it!). Since the Nikon was a gift, I don't have an option to change it, but I know if I ever had the ability to go up another step to a DSLR with changeable lenses, I'd be checking them all out in person before I made any decision.
@crickle1969 Thank you Crickle! I really appreciate your enthusiastic comment!
January 4th, 2012
@olivetreeann I like my Nikon quite a bit! It was a birthday gift to myself and I'd have to say somewhat of an impulse decision. But I am very happy with it in general! I think it is interesting the differences between Nikon and Canon! There are some shots I can get with my Nikon that my friend cannot get on her Canon and vice versus! I hope one day to have both :)
January 5th, 2012
@prttblues I am sorry you feel that way! It really doesn't matter what kind of camera you have as long as you have fun with it! I know alot of photographers here at 365 are way past my level but I just love taking pictures. Hopefully, you can find some more friendly souls here at 365. I know I for one appreciate pointers and like to help anyone I can! So just enjoy yourself and have fun!
January 5th, 2012
@potsbypam Thanks Pam- yes, they'll both come in handy for different things.
January 5th, 2012
Bev
@olivetreeann Thank you for taking the time out to look at and comment on my pictures. I need to get out there and get some more for my light series. I am mixing it up a bit though between light and shadow. The holidays put all that on hold. I had to share the gifts my sweetheart got me as they are all absolutely lovely gifts. The program still isn't working. Something is wrong in one of my .NET thingies. I have spent 2 days with 2 different tech teams. I'm taking a break before I tackle the issue. I did find a way to upload my pictures in the meantime, so I can deal with the program not working. thank you for your words of encouragement. I still feel the same way though. I don't know how people can get so many followers. I enjoy the pictures I take. It's just sad that not many see them. My little point and shoot has pumped out some impressive professional looking pictures. I just can't get any exposure. I'm glad you found that post I did and started following me, too. I don't care if I hit the pop page or not. I just feel like an outsider here. /rant
January 5th, 2012
@prttblues Thanks Bev- smart girl to figure out a way around that program!! Yes- those light pictures are pretty awesome and incredible for a point and shoot. I found that very intriguing when I started following you! I don't know the what or why of your circumstances and agree with you on the pp although I've made it a couple times. I don't know how I got there and it was nice that I did, but if it happens it does, if it doesn't it's not earth shattering! I see a few people stress about and think, "Why??!" Still sorry about your feelings as an outsider, but now we've got our own "inside", so we'll just have fun with that. It's good that you took pictures of the Christmas gifts- sometiems taking a break from our "passion" actually improves the work we're doing there. So, I'm looking forward to the light and shadow series that's coming up. Hope all the glitches in the computer get worked out soon!
