I have driven up and down the road to the clubhouse hundreds of times on my way to my morning swim. One day last fall I realized that there were some Turkey Tails forming on one of the dead trees by the roadside, but as I was on my way to somewhere else, I filed the information in my memory and didn't really think of it much after that. Every once and a while I would "see" them again. They grew bigger and bigger and I would always think, "I need to stop and shoot those one of these days!" but then continue on my merry way. Last week I noticed that they'd passed their prime and I knew I'd better get a photo of them soon before they completely decomposed. Today was the day I finally stopped! And what a reward awaited me! Not only were the mushrooms themselves fascinating, the details were spectacular! Sometimes an oddity will catch your attention as a photographer and you're tempted to think that that's what it's all about- noticing these unique things and registering them on film. But sometimes the reward is not the quirk of nature or essence of the moment- it's in the details; those tiny pieces of the big picture that make you step back and say "Wow!" Although I took lots of shots today of the tree at large, this was the shot that made me step back and say "Wow!"
@karenann Thanks Karenann! It was a light brown color. There is a collage version posted on my 365 album either on Jan. 29 or 30. @digitalrn Thank you so much Rick!
@bkbinthecity Thank you Brian! @alia_801 Thank you Alia! @dmariewms Thanks Marie!
Thanks to all- I really appreciate the comments and am slowly getting caught up on all your shots.
@allie912 Thank you Allison. That's what we've always called them, but I think they go by other names as well. I'm not sure what the official name is either. I've tried looking mushroom names up on the Internet and it's really hard because there are so many of them!!
@sarasdadandmom Thank you Terry! @mrssmith Thanks Carla! I'm starting to recognize that when you see something you should really stop to take it, because some things don't stick around forever!
Gorgeous and a fav. Simple and yet intricate. And yes, I too have learned that things don't last long...if you don't get that photo, and get it soon, you may not...glad you got this one!
@kloud Thanks Bonnie- I was really disappointed that this didn't make the extraordinary vote, but then the weekly themes never seem to have the best of the best in the vote anyway, so, oh well. Your words are more meaningful anyhow since I consider your shots like this are usually phenomenal!
