Adhesive

What can you write about a picture of the world's most common adhesive? How about a little history?

Cellophane tape was invented by Dick Drew over a span of two years and by persevering through many tests and trial runs. On Sept. 8, 1930 the first role of 3M Scotch Tape was sent to a prospective customer. The customer liked the product and felt 3M should put the product on the market stating, "There will be sufficient volume of sales to justify the expenditure." The customer's words proved to be a considerable understatement!

The larger role of tape in the foreground here is actually a role of 3M Scotch Tape, but the smaller role that's standing up is a knock-off. So much for product loyalty.
Cool idea

Well, the things I learn every day! Ann did you home school your children? :)
April 9th, 2012
@cortens lol Julie! Actually I did for a little while- from kindergarten to 4th grade for the older, and kindergarten to 2nd for the younger. They went to Christian school for a while after that and then on to public school and college.

You have that home school mom outlook - everything is an opportunity to learn :) - we home schooled for a good chunk of their education. :)

Very informative. Thanks for the lesson, Ann. Nice shot too. I like the composition.

Great back story to adhesive!

@cortens Thanks Julie- I think home schooling is great! We didn't stop because I didn't like it, we had an opportunity through ministry work for our sons to attend a Christian school, so that's how they ended up there. But I've always been inquisitive this way.
@pngmeri Thanks Mary! Glad you enjoyed it.
@httpgeffed Thanks Colleen!

@mrssmith Thanks Carla- probably not one of my more creative shots, but it worked for the subject!

@woot Thanks Davide! Now you do!
@bruni Thank you Bruni!
@inertie lol Inertia- they stay in the drawer most of the time. I guess that's why they look so clean.
@tklein Thank you Tina! The funny thing is he was actually working on a different project involving the insulation and he needed something sticky to hold it together.
@karenann Thanks Karenann! I know, think of all those gifts you've wrapped that wouldn't have looked so nice if they couldn't be taped together!
@prttblues Thanks Bev!

Such a handy item to have around.

@digitalrn Thanks Rick! I found it really interesting that this marvel was created a year after the stock market crash.

i love 3M scotch tapes. am very loyal to the brand. i'm never happy with the wannabe's no matter the price. that's why our supplies at the office are safe from me: i buy my own. nice shot, ann. and the info is great.

@summerfield Thanks Vikki!

Nice idea and thanks for the info

Cool capture, very creative and lovely composition. Interesting info too.

Great shot! I like the two different kinds of tape. I'd never experienced 3M tape in the UK. Clear sellotape was much more common. Magic or scotch tape (as 3M seemed to be known) is the main option here in Australia though...

@bkbinthecity @sangwann @alia_801 thank you Brian, Dione and Alia! Funny how you can turn something as simple as tape into a nice shot just by going with the b/w!
April 10th, 2012
Thank you for the lesson, Ann. Cool shot, too! Something we certainly can't go without. Wonder how they wrapped presents before 1930? ;-)
April 10th, 2012
love when you give a history lesson with your photo! Great b&w
April 10th, 2012
@cimes1 Thank you Carole! Stiffer paper and string!
@crickle1969 Thank you Chrystal! It's so much nicer to add a little flare every now and then rather than "This is a role of tape." lol
April 10th, 2012
Oh, that's interesting. So what did they do with presents before 1930? Makes life a lot easier.
April 12th, 2012
Neat composition and history! I like this in black and white.
April 12th, 2012
@jeancarl Thanks JeanCarl! I believe wrapping involved stiffer paper and string up till then.
@deniseinindy Thanks Denise!
