I knew when I saw this that it would be my next "take another look shot", so I apologize for posting yet another shot from our trip to Cape May. Someone mentioned on my Buckeye shot yesterday that the large spots on the butterfly's wings served to make predators think they were looking at the eyes of something much larger. Well here you see that tactic in full force. Take another look and someone might be looking back at you!
@crickle1969 Thanks Chrystal! Just one butterfly- a Buckeye- but a big one! The wings you see showing are the two bottom segments. Thanks sooo much for the fav too!
@lesphoto Thanks Leslie! @crickle1969 There is a shot of the Buckeye in my second album- either on Wed. or Thurs. If you go to the second album and pull up the calendar you'll see it. It's not as large as a Swallowtail, but it's bigger than a Cabbage Butterfly.
@adobewaters Thank you Adobe! @kerristephens Thanks Kerri! The sun was really brightening everything up. @sharritta Thanks Sharon. I took this picture and even I keep staring at it. I think it has to do with the angle. The Buckeye was perched on this plant (which I can't seem to identify although it was growing quite rampantly along the path!) and I held the camera below it to take the shot. I did that on purpose because I could see the "eyes" from that position. Although the top shot was just as nice, it was a little beyond my ability to shoot since there was some poison ivy mixed in the growth there.
I LOVE these butteflies. I got a shot of one (a bad one...from my old p and s) in the fall...the sun was coming through from the front and those eyes were back lit. i wish I could see one of these again when I have my DSLR! This is nice!
@olivetreeann I have seen them at school and that is where I got that other shot..and saw one this spring but did not get a good pic. So....when school starts there is hope!
@olivetreeann Funny, but those butterflies...I have seen every one in that little strip of grass and weeds by my car in the parking lot! Not the Outdoor Classroom. Funny huh?
wow! it looks like a mirror reflection but on closer inspection you'd know it isn't. it reminds me of 'the scream' by edward munch. (that or jeff dunham's puppetry, if you're into that comedy thing.) great shot, ann!
Wow! At first I thought there were four butterflies there, then I looked more closely! I'd certainly think twice if I was a predator looking for lunch! Great shot!
BTW I've been pondering a challenge for July. I'm thinking of a weekly theme that makes a pattern on the calendar view, e.g. Week 1 = rainbow, Monday = red, Tuesday = orange... so when you look at the calendar view you see the rainbow...
Week 2, numbers 1-7
Week 3, maybe horizon? Shots with a line through the middle that can continue across the pics?
Week 4 - running out of ideas... maybe B&W shapes?
(then there's just a couple of odd days at the start and end of the month to deal with...)
What do you think?
@summerfield Thanks Vikki. This was pretty cool to see. I'd heard about it and seen pictures- but this was actually seeing it first hand! @ulpiphotos Thanks Ulpi! @sangwann Thanks Dione! @alia_801 Thanks Alia! @sabine Thanks Sabine!
Never apologize for posting" just another" shot. This is too fabulous not to share. Wow, and you got 2 butterflies in such perfect synchronization. I am happy just to find one. My fav of the day!
@alia_801 That sounds interesting! You might want to give people the option of a horizontal or vertical line for a little creative freedom but emphasize it's one or the other the whole week through. B/W shapes works too- and you could make it a straight run to the end of the month by alternating circle, square, circle, square... but if that seems too complicated choose one and let the last three days be the other- B/W circles; three days of squares. I would leave the interpretation abstract- that is I wouldn't tell people to shoot the horizon, just that it has to be a vertical line. The reason being is that not all people live in a flat place where you can do that- or have access to that kind of vista. Like me- I'm surrounded by mountains not mesas! But I can think of several ways to take an abstract with a horizontal (or vertical) line. You'll have to think of a creative name that captures what the calendar will look like once the month is done- folks seem to like those fun things! But it sounds good to me!
My mind kind of boggled when you said that was not two butterflies. It went from "beautiful" to "Ooh creepy" thinking about one big bug. Cool picture, love the eyes but shivering a little
@pandorasecho Thanks (I think!) Dixie! Nothing to be scared about. It's really not that big- see June 20th of my second album for a shot from the top. @karenann Thank you Karenann! @la_photographic Thank you Laura! @paulavdmerwe Thank you Paula! @melorac Thank you Carole! (stunnig or stunning- either way!)
Fantastic shot, Ann! Love the butterflies, the flowers, the greenery. A very excellent combination. Still amazed how you get so many views and comments... You are well deserving though because you take such wonderful photos. I am glad you took a second look, otherwise we wouldn't have seen such a great photo. Well done!
@prttblues Thanks Bev- just one butterfly here- the eyes are on the lower portion of his two wings (it's a Buckeye like the one I took on the path). I think it's just the people who follow me are really good about commenting. I don't deserve their kindness, but I am very grateful for it. I count you among some of my most faithful followers and am really appreciative of everything you write!
@olivetreeann Thanks! I think we have a challenge :) I was thinking of having a different shape each time for the fourth week - circle, square, triangle... not sure if that would ruin the continuity of the calendar though...
@alia_801 I say give people the option of which shape they want to do, but make it the same one all week. @salza Thanks Sally! @potsbypam Thanks Pam! @summerfield Vikki- Alia's tentative outline for the July challenge is posted above- see what you think.
@cimes1 Thank you Carole! I think I missed your comment before!! Thanks for the fav! By the way- this is just one butterfly. You are seeing the bottom portion of each of his two wings.

@annbo Thank you so much Ann!
@espyetta Thanks MaryBeth- oh you'll probably get another one during one of your bug safaris!
@espyetta Yes- I thought of your open classroom- I'm sure you'll see one there.
@wenbow Thank you Wendy!
@mrssmith Thanks Carla!
