30 Days in June- Day 23 by olivetreeann

30 Days in June- Day 23

I knew when I saw this that it would be my next "take another look shot", so I apologize for posting yet another shot from our trip to Cape May. Someone mentioned on my Buckeye shot yesterday that the large spots on the butterfly's wings served to make predators think they were looking at the eyes of something much larger. Well here you see that tactic in full force. Take another look and someone might be looking back at you!
amazingly beautiful!!!! Love the vivid colors and TWO butterflies!!!!! FAV!

@crickle1969 Thanks Chrystal! Just one butterfly- a Buckeye- but a big one! The wings you see showing are the two bottom segments. Thanks sooo much for the fav too!
June 23rd, 2012
@olivetreeann oh, way cool then, I don't think I've ever seen that large a butterfly before.
June 23rd, 2012
Beautifully done Ann.
June 23rd, 2012
@lesphoto Thanks Leslie!
@crickle1969 There is a shot of the Buckeye in my second album- either on Wed. or Thurs. If you go to the second album and pull up the calendar you'll see it. It's not as large as a Swallowtail, but it's bigger than a Cabbage Butterfly.

Great capture Ann!
June 23rd, 2012
@httpgeffed Thanks Colleen! I shot this from below and kept thinking it was like shooting a picture of someone's petticoat!
June 23rd, 2012
wow ann interesting thoughts - nature is amazing - reason for everything - i love it - this is beautiful ann
June 23rd, 2012
Beautiful! Love the color
June 23rd, 2012
Beautiful image! It almost looks like you've cloned one of them in. I had to look closely to see that you hadn't.
June 23rd, 2012
beautiful
June 23rd, 2012
@adobewaters Thank you Adobe!
@kerristephens Thanks Kerri! The sun was really brightening everything up.
@sharritta Thanks Sharon. I took this picture and even I keep staring at it. I think it has to do with the angle. The Buckeye was perched on this plant (which I can't seem to identify although it was growing quite rampantly along the path!) and I held the camera below it to take the shot. I did that on purpose because I could see the "eyes" from that position. Although the top shot was just as nice, it was a little beyond my ability to shoot since there was some poison ivy mixed in the growth there.

Exactly what I imagined when I first opened it up
June 23rd, 2012
Stunning capture Ann! : )
June 23rd, 2012
I LOVE these butteflies. I got a shot of one (a bad one...from my old p and s) in the fall...the sun was coming through from the front and those eyes were back lit. i wish I could see one of these again when I have my DSLR! This is nice!
June 23rd, 2012
@digitalrn Thanks Rick!
@annbo Thank you so much Ann!
@espyetta Thanks MaryBeth- oh you'll probably get another one during one of your bug safaris!
June 23rd, 2012
@olivetreeann I have seen them at school and that is where I got that other shot..and saw one this spring but did not get a good pic. So....when school starts there is hope!
June 23rd, 2012
Great image and so clear, complements your story. Great capture.
June 23rd, 2012
@jesperani Thanks Jennifer!
@espyetta Yes- I thought of your open classroom- I'm sure you'll see one there.
June 23rd, 2012
@olivetreeann Funny, but those butterflies...I have seen every one in that little strip of grass and weeds by my car in the parking lot! Not the Outdoor Classroom. Funny huh?
June 23rd, 2012
@espyetta Hmmm... perhaps they are very environment specific. Parking lots and stone paths do have some things in common as far as that goes.
June 23rd, 2012
This is lovely!! FAV!
June 24th, 2012
Amazing shot, beautiful
June 24th, 2012
Wow! Great capture!
June 24th, 2012
@twinsplusone Thank you sooo much Sharon!!
@wenbow Thank you Wendy!
@mrssmith Thanks Carla!
June 24th, 2012
Love how the wings do look like eyes. Great shot.
June 24th, 2012
@christiehicks Thanks Christie! Nature's pretty amazing with its little tricks!
June 24th, 2012
Great capture!
June 24th, 2012
@lyoungs1023 Thanks Elizabeth!
June 24th, 2012
wow! it looks like a mirror reflection but on closer inspection you'd know it isn't. it reminds me of 'the scream' by edward munch. (that or jeff dunham's puppetry, if you're into that comedy thing.) great shot, ann!
June 24th, 2012
Great shot! Love it!
June 24th, 2012
This is a terrific capture, Ann. The 'eyes' seem to be those of owls looking out for prey.
June 24th, 2012
Wow! At first I thought there were four butterflies there, then I looked more closely! I'd certainly think twice if I was a predator looking for lunch! Great shot!

BTW I've been pondering a challenge for July. I'm thinking of a weekly theme that makes a pattern on the calendar view, e.g. Week 1 = rainbow, Monday = red, Tuesday = orange... so when you look at the calendar view you see the rainbow...
Week 2, numbers 1-7
Week 3, maybe horizon? Shots with a line through the middle that can continue across the pics?
Week 4 - running out of ideas... maybe B&W shapes?
(then there's just a couple of odd days at the start and end of the month to deal with...)
What do you think?
June 24th, 2012
what a fantastic butterfly ! Wonderful capture !
June 24th, 2012
@summerfield Thanks Vikki. This was pretty cool to see. I'd heard about it and seen pictures- but this was actually seeing it first hand!
@ulpiphotos Thanks Ulpi!
@sangwann Thanks Dione!
@alia_801 Thanks Alia!
@sabine Thanks Sabine!
June 24th, 2012
Never apologize for posting" just another" shot. This is too fabulous not to share. Wow, and you got 2 butterflies in such perfect synchronization. I am happy just to find one. My fav of the day!
June 24th, 2012
@alia_801 That sounds interesting! You might want to give people the option of a horizontal or vertical line for a little creative freedom but emphasize it's one or the other the whole week through. B/W shapes works too- and you could make it a straight run to the end of the month by alternating circle, square, circle, square... but if that seems too complicated choose one and let the last three days be the other- B/W circles; three days of squares. I would leave the interpretation abstract- that is I wouldn't tell people to shoot the horizon, just that it has to be a vertical line. The reason being is that not all people live in a flat place where you can do that- or have access to that kind of vista. Like me- I'm surrounded by mountains not mesas! But I can think of several ways to take an abstract with a horizontal (or vertical) line. You'll have to think of a creative name that captures what the calendar will look like once the month is done- folks seem to like those fun things! But it sounds good to me!
June 24th, 2012
@alia_801 I meant horizontal line in the picture on the seventh line in my comment- not vertical!
June 24th, 2012
My mind kind of boggled when you said that was not two butterflies. It went from "beautiful" to "Ooh creepy" thinking about one big bug. Cool picture, love the eyes but shivering a little
June 24th, 2012
How beautiful this is ... soft and lovely! They really do make you look twice! Absolutely gorgeous color tones, lighting and composition.
June 24th, 2012
That is amazing - love the "eyes" on the butterfly.
June 24th, 2012
Very true ... looks like eyes staring at me :)
June 24th, 2012
Love the eyes, this really is a stunnig shot, nice one
June 24th, 2012
OK it is also a stunning shot lol
June 24th, 2012
@pandorasecho Thanks (I think!) Dixie! Nothing to be scared about. It's really not that big- see June 20th of my second album for a shot from the top.
@karenann Thank you Karenann!
@la_photographic Thank you Laura!
@paulavdmerwe Thank you Paula!
@melorac Thank you Carole! (stunnig or stunning- either way!)

Bev
Fantastic shot, Ann! Love the butterflies, the flowers, the greenery. A very excellent combination. Still amazed how you get so many views and comments... You are well deserving though because you take such wonderful photos. I am glad you took a second look, otherwise we wouldn't have seen such a great photo. Well done!
June 25th, 2012
@prttblues Thanks Bev- just one butterfly here- the eyes are on the lower portion of his two wings (it's a Buckeye like the one I took on the path). I think it's just the people who follow me are really good about commenting. I don't deserve their kindness, but I am very grateful for it. I count you among some of my most faithful followers and am really appreciative of everything you write!
June 25th, 2012
Great shot! My best one of a buckeye was on a beach, so that fits with parking lots and gravel paths...
June 25th, 2012
@dmariewms This path leads to the beach- so there you go! Thanks Marie!
June 25th, 2012
@olivetreeann Thanks! I think we have a challenge :) I was thinking of having a different shape each time for the fourth week - circle, square, triangle... not sure if that would ruin the continuity of the calendar though...
June 25th, 2012
Such a fantastic shot and certainly well worth a second look!
June 25th, 2012
Those eyes would totally freak my cats out which is their ingenius purpose! Wow!
June 25th, 2012
@alia_801 I say give people the option of which shape they want to do, but make it the same one all week.
@salza Thanks Sally!
@potsbypam Thanks Pam!
@summerfield Vikki- Alia's tentative outline for the July challenge is posted above- see what you think.
June 26th, 2012
@cimes1 Thank you Carole! I think I missed your comment before!! Thanks for the fav! By the way- this is just one butterfly. You are seeing the bottom portion of each of his two wings.
June 26th, 2012
