Photography Book Club 20

The eye, and how it works with the mind, is a fascinating organ. When we look at something we automatically adjust our perception so that a square looks square and its lines are straight. But a camera, according to Freeman Patterson, does not automatically correct these things. I thought it would be fun to see this principal side by side. So I took a picture of the shadows on my front window blinds this afternoon. I then posted the original untouched version (the BEFORE shot) on the left and the corrected version (the AFTER shot) on the right. The left side is how your camera truly perceives space, lines and color. The right side is how your eyes typically adjust the scene before you. It is also the difference in the way you and your camera see color.
The colours are certainly more vibrant and how we see colour! I'm sometimes disappointed with my shots - drab but it can be edited so it is more natural!

@dakotaburns Thanks Donald! I've been reading this book but I find actually taking the shots to see what they're talking about is helping me to understand it better.

@nicolecampbell Thanks Nicole- it does have that appearance until you see the shadows of the bottles.
@fullcircle Thank you Cindy- and thanks for the fav!
@moreyoulessme Thanks Jerri! I'm enjoying it. I'm trying to pay more attention to what I see and why it appeals to me now instead of just shooting until something looks good.
@edie Thanks Edie!

great illustration of colours. it is one of my small frustrations when i'm taking photos, especially of the flowers. but sometimes when i feel like it, i adjust the white balance and it seems to work. not all the time though and don't get me started on white balance! argh!

The light and shadow and the bands create such movement in this image.

@nadaa Thanks Nada- again just checking out to see if the principal really held true. It's good for me to test them out. I feel I learn more that way.
