Photography Book Club 21

I was reading in Freeman Patterson's book when I noticed the afternoon light streaming on to the wooden floor today. Photo opp!

Here are a few of the principals mentioned in Patterson's book that you can see "in action" in this shot concerning light and lines:

Tonal contrast is influenced by the quality and direction of light- in this case the light is coming from behind the subject, but is somewhat broken up by the window blinds. Two or more colors add contrast and help to establish lines, shapes, textures and perspective. In this shot, the contrasting colors are those of the blue bottle and its reflection and the golden tone of the wood grain on the floor.

Lines are created by either tonal or color contrast. In this shot both color and tone play a part in making the lines of the composition.

The length and orientation of lines give the viewer direction, have expressive power, and with skillful use of the number of lines in the shot and their position, the composition becomes both simple and dynamic. In this shot the colors of the shadow, the floor and the bottle create a diagonal that moves your eye from the upper right hand corner of the picture to the bottom center of the shot. Blue evokes either a peaceful or melancholy feeling but this is counterbalanced by the sunlight across the floor and even in the bottle itself. The bold diagonal makes this a simple composition, but the splash of color adds dynamic to the overall shot.

Do you feel like you're in school? O.K. then, class dismissed!
This is gorgeous, I really like the vibrant blue of the vase and the patterns it is casting across the floor (which looks very nice by the way; I hope you are pleased with how it turned out).

It took me a second to figure out what I was looking at - really expressive abstract. Your description of following the principles was interesting to read. I must get this book., great work.

Great abstract Ann, and thanks for sharing the information.

Gorgeous colours in the blue light :) I like your shot a lot - though I got lost in the explanations - I've mostly given up on the book for now as I don't have time to think about things properly. It sounds like you understand it all far better than me :)

I like what you did here and how you've explained it. I've bumped up against no time so haven't kept up this week with Peterson's book. It looks like it's important to get back into it -- to get images like this! Nicely done!

@nicolecampbell Thanks Nicole! On the whole I'm happy with it. I was hoping for something a little darker, but I think as it ages it will deepen a little bit. I think once all my furniture moves back in, I will like it even more!
@twr Thank you Timothy!
@kerristephens Thank you Kerri!
@vankrey Thank you Michael! It's a great book. The sections are easy to read and not long. He has examples all the way through the book. I would highly recommend it .
@fullcircle Thank you Cindy! Writing about what I've applied actually helps me to learn it!
@alia_801 Thank you Alia! I guess I should have separated Peterson's words from mine. Actually I take notes when I'm reading the book! It helps me to understand the principles a bit better. Even if you just focus (oh no- no pun intended!) on the first section and doing those exercises, it will benefit you as a photographer. Have fun with it- and remember, I'm unemployed- you're not!
@photo_mum Thank you Pauline!
@digitalrn Thank you Rick!
@sarasdadandmom Thank you Terry!
@salza Thank you Sally!
@taffy Thanks Taffy! Like I said to Alia, even if all you do is the exercises from the first section, it will benefit you as a photographer. And don't forget- I am unemployed, but you have a job. Big difference in the time factor there!
@daisy Thank you Kathryn!
@edie Thank you Edie! I have to take notes when I'm reading the book! That way I can actually understand what I'm reading and put it into practice. It's just the way I learn.

it's funny but this reminded me of the times when i was a small girl and i did something wrong so my mother would ask me to sit in a corner as a punishment. but i think later on she had caught on that i actually enjoyed the punishments because i'm always looking at the reflections on the floor coming from the sunlight through the window and through the stuff on the sill. bottles are my favourites. needless to say, she had become innovative with the punishments she gave me as i grew older. hehehe! wonderful shot and thanks for stirring yet again some wonderful memories.
