I called the church (United Methodist Church in Hamilton) and was told that the area once had a large African American population, and the cemetery had been neglected, fallen into disrepair, and forgotten. The concrete slab with all the headstones on it was built about 30 years ago because many of the headstones had toppled over, and they couldn't tell where exactly they belonged. So all those headstones are on the slab in memory of the deceased they belong to, and as a way to honor them.
Oh so many thanks to one and all for putting my sweet and silly pigs on to the PP! The yellow one is a piggy bank from pre-teens years and still holds some of the coins I saved then- like the silver dollars my dad would give me occasionally.
@sangwann It says "Who me?" I had these stickers way back when and thought that one was particularly funny for a piggy bank for some reason. It's been stuck on there for a LONG time!
@skstein Thanks for sharing all that research Sandy! I guess I understand why the church would "dress up" the truth a bit as that was a HUGE mistake to 1) disturb and 2) pave over graves! Saying they'd fallen into disrepair is putting it mildly! However, I'll give them credit as they are at least acknowledging the cemetery and paying honor to those who were laid to rest there. It's an odd twist to "Big Yellow Taxi", right?
