Sandy swept across the Poconos in full force on Tuesday the 31st (which is when I took this shot). It was interesting to us that we really did not get a lot of rain like we did when Irene blew in to town. And there was not much wind at ground level which is why you don't see any leaves swirling about in this picture. Instead, the upper canopy of the trees took the brunt of the winds and unfortunately, my camera would not allow me to slow the shutter speed down enough to really capture what a blur that looked like. So I settled for this shot looking out the sliding glass doors on the back of my house. The winds didn't let up until late Wednesday evening. By that time we'd seen quite a spectacle out of this window- birds and squirrels feeding at the feeder in spite of the lousy weather and two dead trees falling down in the woods behind our property. Our own trees held up like troopers and only dropped one larger branch close to the wood pile. Good shot!! The memory from Hurricane Sandy that will remain stuck in my mind though will be the weird color of the sky that night and the image of the neighbor's trees parted like the Red Sea across the street from us.
By the way, I now know the answer to that age-old puzzle, "If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there, does it make a sound?" Since I was technically not in the forest when the first tree fell back there, I can now verify that "yes", trees which fall in forests always make a sound.
Thanks Sally! About half of them were down before Sandy, the other half came down during Sandy. About an eighth of them have blown away with some of the wintery winds we've had today. At this rate, Jeff won't have to use the leaf blower at all.
Nice image, and with one heck of a good story to back it up of course. I really like that lens distortion by the way - something I've been playing about with now that I'm stuck with a point and shoot. It's fun, but I don't want to live with it for too long.
By the way, do you not think it depends on how you define "sound"? ;-)
@kandernob Thanks Karen! Not too scarey during the day- but at night it was pretty noisy and the trees were really blowing around. So it did make you think twice about where things might fall! @cdonohoue thanks Cathy- we have an "industrial" size leaf blower, so clean-up is a breeze! @kerristephens thank you Kerri! @automaticslim thanks Andy! My poor little p/s just did not want to give me a straight line there! It looks sort of funny to me. It might have been that I took the shot sitting down. haha on the def. of sound. The two we heard were a loud and sound "THUMP". But I suppose that's open to interpretation too! @filsie65 Thanks Phil- well, it's somewhat hard to describe actually. But I remember waking up around 2 AM because the wind was so loud. I looked out the window and saw the trees waving about wildly. The sky was sort of luminous- which surprised me as I knew there was a heavy cloud cover due to the storm. But it looked like someone turned a bright light on behind them and it gave them a bluish gray tint. It was still dark, but there was definitely an unusual color to them. @prttblues Thanks Bev! Other than the inconvenience of power and plumbing loss, we made do and got through it! @vposey Thanks Vickie- I guess it really should be "When" a tree falls! @allie912 Thanks Allison! Snug as a bug in a rug!
Well I'm glad to know they make noise regardless. You are blanketed with a lot of leaves there Ann. It looks beautiful. When you live in a wooded area like that, it can be quite scary during those storms.
Great capture and colours - and thanks for your tree-sound experiment too :)
PS Don't feel you have to comment on any of my pics until you're caught up with everything - I know exactly what it's like :)
@sangwann Thank you Dione! We were blessed in so many ways even thought we lost power for a week. I am sure your prayers are greatly appreciated by those who are still working through the aftermath. @alia_801 Thank you Alia! I appreciate that. We are on our way to see the grandkids today- a nice treat after the trip was post-poned by Sandy. It's a quick trip, but worth it!
Very well captured---actually a very pretty scene despite the awful weather. How nice to have captured these not so pleasant times in your photo diary.
Glad you didn't have any real damage.

I love the colours in this
