Vintage Books

Today's word was "book" for Book Lover's Day. I discovered some interesting settings in my new Powershot. This one selects a color and highlights it in camera- a similar idea to editing a picture with selective coloring. Since these books were predominantly brown and black, the shot really did look like I'd put the colors back in post-processing, so I added the selective coloring tag.
Very cool outcome, Ann!

Bev
Nice shot, Ann! You will have to tell me what setting that is! I might not have it but if I do, I've missed it!! Your camera rocks!
August 12th, 2014
@prttblues Thanks Bev! There is a setting on my mode dial that looks like two circles overlapping. I select that icon and I am given a handful of creative options to choose from: fisheye, vivid color, posterize, toy camera (etc) and one called Color Accent which is what I shot this picture in. It is somewhat like selective coloring in that it puts the majority of the shot into monochrome and highlights red. I don't know if your version has it or not.

@olivetreeann Mine has Fisheye, Miniature, Monochrome, Toy Camera, Vivid and Posterize... Now I want an upgrade!!
August 13th, 2014
@prttblues I was fiddling around with that setting again yesterday and quite frankly, I think it's easier to do in post processing! So not to worry Bev- you can get this look without upgrading. Shoot your picture in color. Go to Ribbet. Upload. Sharpen, adjust contrast to your liking first, then convert to black and white. Paint back in the portions of the original color shot that you want to remain in color. Save. Go to True Vintage effect and choose one of the applications that you like for your shot. Slide the color override bar until you get the amount of color back into the shot that you want. Save. Add a frame if you want, save and have fun posting it on 365. Ribbet is free. You can also achieve this effect in Picmonkey by uploading your shot directly to 365 and then selecting the "edit in Picmonkey" option in the right-side menu bar. I'm not sure what the setting name is for the vintage effect, but I'm pretty sure it's similar to what Ribbet calls it.
