Last fall I bought some gourds at the Farmer's Market and decorated my table with them. They stayed in a bowl over the winter and come spring I thought, "Why not let the birds and chipmunks dig out the seeds and have a feast?" So I set them down in one of my decorative flowerpots and let nature take its course. The bulk of them were carted off and consumed.
But one seed managed to take hold and now I have a vine growing on my deck! Today one of the blossoms opened up. I guess they follow the sun because by late afternoon it had closed again. The coloring reminded me of a Creamsicle- those ice cream treats which have orange sherbert on the outside and creamy vanilla ice cream on the inside. Yum!
@cruiser Thanks Chris! Yes, it's growing, the deer won't come on the deck to eat it, and the critters seemed disinterested in it- so yes. If all the blossoms indicate a gourd will grow there, I should have 6 of them. I'm watching it very carefully!
I was going to say this looks like a pumpkin flower. I have just finished cutting up another whole pumpkin and am roasting it in the oven. My parents like the soup I made on Monday so much that they have requested more. I have developed a lovely recipe if you would like to have it.
